I thought that the Conservatives had completely gone off the rails, and had totally lost their way in the culture war arguments, so good to see that they haven’t forgotten how to scam the taxpayer and con themselves millions of public money.

Getting back to their core values.

In the past week, I have spoken to several Tory MPs who are at the end of their tether. And before you bristle, a Labour supporter can still have good relations and friendships with people across the political divide. Some of them are standing down, others are questioning their decision to stay on.

pretty silly equivalence by whoever the writer is. the media wont engage in an active campaign against the tories when they elect bravermann or whoever as leader.

Worse its the Tory version of ideological war while in Government. The Tory party is cyclical in nature indeed has much of the popular media batting for them, although there is reason why dodgy right Tv outlets have sprung up .

It'll hold onto a certain idea of conservatism until party discipline and scandal breaks it apart. Then it reforms with a new lick of paint, ready to hoodwink voters all over again. It's a party that simply will not die.

However, I cannot in my memory see such hostility between a sitting PM and predecessor from same party and government. So maybe just maybe it's heading for the fate of the old Liberal Party, political oblivion.

On himself? Probably nothing.

Johnson is just doing the Trump trick of leaving a party-destroying mound of things he did behind on leaving office. His enemies can't release those things because they'd be destroyed themselves, so they humiliate themselves covering up his mess. Meanwhile none of it sticks to him and he walks back into power unopposed by all the people who are now personally compromised.

As with the GOP and Trump, the only sure way for Sunak to beat Johnson is to be as willing to destroy his own party as Johnson is.
