Can't remember where I was listening to it, but a caller to a radio program was coming up with how he would raise £60bn in taxes, over the next few years. All really targeted at those that earn more. The usual stuff was in there, like non dom. But the biggest one was those earning over £50k a year, pay tax from the first £, essentially no £12k allowance.
He showed you can easily bring in £30bn a year without going anywhere near lower/average earners

That seems pretty unfair on people in London, for whom 50k a year isn't extravagant. Around my way you can't really get a 1-bed flat for less than £400k, so whereas £50k p/a might be a lot in some parts of the country, it's not here at all.

And at the risk of repeating myself, the whole argument affords no agency whatsoever to the individuals involved. The term "asylum shoppers" is used so derisively, like the NHS doctors caught up in Sudan should be forced to accept safety in the nearest safe country rather than actually want to come back here because this is where they've got a life. If Russia decided tomorrow to bomb CZ, it's pretty reasonable to assume that the mother-in-law might want to come here rather than to try and rebuild her life in France where she knows no one, but this kind of blindingly obvious thinking doesn't even enter the tiny skulls of these fecking idiots.
