It depends what he’s saying I guess. Free speech doesn’t mean you can spread lies and stoke divisions without consequence.Its not even about whether you agree with Linekers opinions (sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t FWIW).
Its about his right as a non-news/politics broadcaster to be able to give his opinion. People outside of politics should be allowed to give opinion on news and politics whether we agree with them or not, and not be cancelled.
If he was a political reporter then clearly he could not make those comments as a bbc employee. But he talks about football in his role. So as long as he doesnt make political points during sports broadcasts then his personal views are not relevant.
This is basically the problem with all sides of the free speech debate. People are allowed to disagree on issues. Its healthy for a debate and it doesn't make the person you disagree with a bad person.
BBC don’t ever want to be controversial but I don’t particularly believe what he said was particularly outrageous in this instance. It’s clear for all to see and people need to speak out.
