I know, forums, opinions etc. Fine. But this is being asked for an opinion based on little to nothing to judge on.

Where has the 40k per week figure come from?

It came from the Daily Star, so hardly a reputable source.

If there's any truth in it, then I'd expect it to be a figure his salary could raise to if he hits certain performance targets, I can't see it being something he's on from day one of the new contract.

If we hadn't have done it, somebody else would have offered him the same or better.
Talent doesn't come into it. If another team want him he's worth as much as they are willing to pay, if we want to keep him then we have to at least match that.
We obviously value him as much as another club do.
