Current Affairs The "another stabbing in London" thread

Quite a bit I'd have thought. Such as that he hasn't been 'let off', but rather the sentence was suspended as a result of the court being informed that the young man with the knife had previously been kidnapped, bundled into a car and forced to sell drugs. It also wasn't shown in your still image that the car that was being attacked had swerved out of its lane at the guy on his bike, or that the driver declined to give a statement to the police, suggesting the two of them knew one another.

It's undoubtedly an awful state of affairs, but alas the kind of simple narrative you're trying to draw from it is best left to rubbish like the Daily Mail.

Never mind the simple narrative, did you actually see the knife he was using.....

I saw the size of the weapon used to knock him off as well. The court heard he had previously been attacked in a similar manner, hence why he was carrying the weapon in the first place. I appreciate that this doesn't really interest you though as you have points to score.

Bruce, what is this ‘points to score’. Would you like your wife, or anyone really, to come into contact with this guy. He should have been locked up and my guess is he will be shortly....

No, I wouldn't, but I very much doubt she would. Everything about this story suggests that this man was involved in gangs, had been attacked by a car and kidnapped before, and hence was not only carrying this ridiculous weapon to defend himself but was perhaps understandably edgy when he was attacked by a car again, by someone it doesn't seem a stretch to believe is connected to his past in some way.

I don't think anyone would try and suggest this isn't a rubbish situation all round, but trying to paint it as a simple situation with a simple solution is wrong.

It is very simple. The man was carrying a very large knife. It is an offence that requires a custodial sentence. If his story had been exactly how you tell it, but he had been carrying a gun, what would you have said then...

I remember seeing that on the news not long ago, absolutely horrific. Terrifying for anyone watching in the flesh.

It’s nothing to worry about, he was probably in a gang, and had some bad things done to him, then got hit by a car and pulled out that dreadful weapon and would have done god only knows what if he’d got through the window. But as Bruce says it’s just an everyday scene in London and as long as it doesn’t affect anyone he knows then he’s not bothered. This is why parts of our country are becoming cesspits, because no one cares......

I find it hard to believe someone with your experience in project management isn't familiar with root cause analysis. You can use the five why's if lean and six sigma is more your bag. If you want to tackle instances like this, you have to go a lot deeper than this violent outburst.

Bruce. Put the management speak away. There was a man with a very large knife that he just happened to have about his person. There was no doubt an issue between him and the driver of the car. He used this large knife to try and break the window and would no doubt have attacked him if he could. The man with the knife is a danger to the public, and by owning, carrying and using such a knife, has displayed his intent. It is against the law, a custodial sentence should have resulted. I find it hard to believe that you are even attempting to defend this person

I'm not defending him, I'm trying to understand how a young man can get into such a state as to feel the need to carry and then use such a weapon. Without understanding that, it's surely impossible to reduce such instances?

Looked to me like the guy in the car was trying to get away from the guy with the knife. Most likely the guy on the bike was looking for the fella in the car to do him in with his 18inch Rambo knife.

I tend to side with judges because they generally have the full picture of circumstances rather than the headlines but I’d suggest he’s been quite fortunate with the sentencing . If you look at the matters he’s been convicted of whilst wielding a weapon like that I reckon you’d expect a custodial .

I also appreciate points made about his kidnapping but again the circumstances around that you’d expect to be significant . If your kidnapped it must be a horrific experience but if it’s because you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time or if it’s because your criminality puts you at risk I’d say the impact on you may well be the same but should the court view both the same ?

EDIT- just seen the court was told the kidnapping was due to a friend’s drug debt . Again though you’d want more details , I’d presume the judge may well have had them

Like I say I tend to bend towards judges and have regularly argued that sentencing is better left in there hands than the general public , the police or politicians but I’m not surprised that this one is being looked at again . Once that’s done though it may be viewed to be absolutely fine , I’d think his age plays a huge part in it as well to be honest .
