Absolutely this. There was a shooting here in TN a few years back where two pre-teen kids got into an argument while playing outside their houses, and one went inside, got his parent’s gun, came back outside and shot the other kid dead in their front yard.
Majority of school shooters get their guns from home including Sandy Hook

Overall risks are higher to children with a gun in the house.

Unintentional shootings & gun injuries
Unintentional shootings happen to children of all ages. In homes with guns, the likelihood of accidental death by shooting is four times higher. Between 2015 and 2020, there were at least 2,070 unintentional shootings by children that resulted in 765 deaths and 1,366 nonfatal gun injuries. In 2020 alone, at least 125 toddlers and children ages 5 and under shot themself or someone else. Cdc The COVID-19 pandemic hasn't helped either. From March to December 2020, unintended shooting deaths by kids went up more than 30% compared to the same time period in 2019.

Suicide risk with guns in the home
Kids and adolescents are at an increased risk for suicide when there is a gun in the home too. Suicide rates in this population are four times higher than for kids who live in homes without guns. In the past decade, 40% of the suicides committed by kids and teens involved guns. Nine out of 10 of these suicides were with guns that the victims accessed at their own homes or from a relative's home.

Guns, kids & homicides
The risk of homicide is three times higher when there are guns in the home. Not only that, but 58% of shooting deaths in children and teens are homicides.

Poor kid, poor father

such sad stuff.
It terrifies me.
One of my wife's best friends, an NP and no fan of guns recently got married and now over casual conversations it seems like they have several guns in their home. Before I knew, we'd leave our son there, now, if we want him to stay again, I have to have that awkward conversation about how they keep their guns. I'm fully expecting the husband to take offense as in 'how dare I insult his intelligence'. My kid is 4 and a brat who loves ironman and 'blasters'.

With any luck the wife at least will realize the question is just responsible parenting and a case of “better safe than sorry”.

Maybe, in an effort to protect your son and not ruin the relationship with the BFF's husband, you can phrase it as "I'm not insulting your intelligence, I'm concerned about the curiosity, imagination and safety of a 4 y.o."

You shouldn't have to do that, of course, but what's most important is protecting your child.

Yea, It'll go something like that. Just an awkward conversation I never expected to have to have.
I've a fair idea that as soon as her husband started going on about what fun they have at the shooting range and how a gun was a great mothers day gift, she knew the conversation was coming.

oh that flipping sucks - just what every (rational) Mom wants for Mother's Day......

Does the NP work in a pediatrics or family med practice? that would be even better!
