Surely crime levels are significantly lower in those countries? I'd guess a lot of the gun ownership in those countries is hunting related. Don't cities like Chicago have that many gang related deaths at weekends now that it's barely news?
If you gave all of the young lads on the estates guns throughout the UK we'd probably have similar problems I'd imagine.
As I said I think it is complicated - a lot of US gun ownership is also hunting related, even here in suburban California with comparatively strict gun laws I know lots of people with guns (many with multiple) and the primary ownership reason is hunting.
However there is no reason for instance a gun originally brought to go hunting at a weekend couldn't be used in a robbery, or a kid in the household doesn’t steal it to do a mass shooting at their school or it is used the hunt down an ex and kill them and their new family but it just doesn’t seem to happen as often in other countries.
