Why are you so sure the Americans wouldn't do the same as the Vietnamese or Afghani people if push came to shove
Because my experience with Americans (not sure if you are one) is that on the whole, we are privileged and soft and do not deal especially well with privation. Further, Americans lack a sense of collective sacrifice.

But the "if push came to shove" is the real issue. Guns are not going to be banned in the United States anytime soon, if ever. And I'm not calling for it to be done.

Fair enough mate, i'm not american but i'd be on your side in not calling for it to be done

Cool.

But to be clear, while not in favor of outright banning of guns in the US I am very much in favor of legally required education/proficiency and enforced responsibility to own firearms. What exists today is wholly inadequate and makes us all less safe.

It's not about being OK with the deaths but rather it's about accepting the consequences of its mere existence for the greater good. You can't give me a single entity on this planet, that doesn't come with some form of consequence.

Banning Assault Rifles doesn't make much sense, when it comes to gun control. Assault rifles literally only make up 2-3% of the total gun-related deaths in America. Plus, there's not much evidence that "gun control" works. Illinois/Chicago has very strict gun-control yet Chicago has one of the highest rates of gun homicides.
Plenty of evidence soft lad. Here in Australia handguns and assault rifles were banned after the Port Arthur massacre in '97.

Guess how many massacres we've had since?

I cannot fathom how people can see that in countries where guns are not as easy to own there are far fewer (if any) mass shootings and far fewer other types of gun crime.
Then witness time and time again people getting killed (often children) and not even want to talk about seriously getting guns off the streets.
If these events, occurring on a scale like nowhere else, won't change their minds, I can't see what will.
