Got this e-mail from a research associate earlier today:
'Getting many queries about if we’re okay. My wife had a very close call as she’d planned to be in the store at the time of the mass shooting.

'First of all, the King Soopers grocery store in the news has been our food supermarket for over 40 years. It is about a km from our house and we pass if almost every day. You can’t leave our neighborhood to go further into Boulder without passing by King Soopers.

'Today, Sue, my wife, had a very close call with fate. She works out in the swimming pool at the athletic club she belongs to three times a week as part of her recovery from a knee replacement. Today, she planned to get our weekly groceries on the way home from her class and took the station wagon to load up at the store. Normally takes her about 90 min. to do the shopping. However, today she had a particularly intense work out in the pool and was so exhausted that when she reached the store she decided she just didn’t have the energy to do the shopping, and passed by to go home and take a nap. Thirty minutes later the shooter opened fire with an AR15 automatic rifle and killed nine people in the store and the first policeman that responded to the scene. We don’t yet know who the nine people in the store were that were murdered, but some may have been in line to get COVID shots at the in-store pharmacy. Almost certainly some of the people that were killed were people that we know, as our entire neighborhood shops there.'

Scary...

Guns have no practical use in society.
Because the saying goes; people would rather take the risk of living in a free democratic but potentially dangerous society rather than a safe but oppressive society. Everything comes with a cost.

Guns do have a use in society. Guns are for self-defence purposes of course and it is a huge deterrent to any crime. But to speak, guns are there to empower the society and to give the public the power over a potential "tyrannical" government.

Sorry mate but thats a load of absolute garbage. The 10 people lying dead on a supermarket floor with bullet holes in them will attest to that.

The latter is one of the most-common and most absurd notions of defenders of the out-moded Second Amendment in the US Constitution.

Shooters identity released, Ahmed Al Aliwi Alissa.

Wonder if the local sheriff will say he had a bad day and we will soon hear how he's a lovely guy who attends the local mosque everyday. Or he has mental health issues?

Doubt it, we know whats coming.

Does it matter what the local Sheriff says?

And yes, we do know what's coming... a proper punishment!

Nah, that's a crazy way of thinking...

I'm walking home from work right now through a relatively tough neighbourhood. I feel extremely safe, safer than if I was carrying a gun as self-defence.
If I've got a gun, then some crazy wandering along drinking has got a gun, the woman just went past walking her labrodor has got a gun as have the 3 lads talking standing by railings chatting who've got guns.
No one's bothering anyone else, the lab even wagged himself over for a quick stroke and a friendly hello as they passed.
If we all have guns or the potential chance of possesing them, then the dynamics of my quiet walk home totally change.

Yep. For the government (ie elected officials and political appointees) to be a threat the military would have to accept likely illegal/unconstitutional orders.

So you are assuming the military are corrupt (the majority - not just the top brass), willing to commit treason and to kill fellow citizens.

If you argue that the orders could be constitutional, you are then assuming mostly untrained folks with rifles (even AR-15) and hand guns can defeat the fully engaged US military with trillions (quadrillions?) of dollars of advanced weaponry.

Both of the above are very non-GOP positions to take...as evidenced by my dad's (ex-military) sputtering when we had such a discussion.

Guns are the simple rights of civilians, something that has its purpose yet it can be abused in a negative way. It's like saying motor vehicles aren't fine, because they can be used to ram people over or something which can be responsible for someone's death.
Guns are simple rights?

Behave.

The head-cases point to Waco as a reason why they should be armed, completely missing the point that them having guns is the reason it was stormed with gunfire in the first place.
