In order to understand the gun debate, we need to first understand why Americans are so scared and what they are scared of. Farmers and hunters can claim a legitimite reason for owning a gun, other than that, the main reason is fear. Why are they so scared they feel the need to own a gun?

I did listen to conservative talk radio quite a bit this afternoon. I will give Michael Medved credit...he at least challenges the callers when they call in with crazy talk. I think he frustrates his audience because he doesn't allow it to be an echo chamber. He at least sticks to the facts and doesn't allow wild conspiracy theories to run wild.

Some of the callers today were frighteningly brainwashed.

1. It's a right according to the constitution (sort of).
2. Billions of dollars are at stake.
3. The NRA fights tooth and nail to protect 1 and 2.
4. The Supreme Court has ruled over and over again in favor of 3 in it's interpretation of 1.

There is a lot to this. I’m not a farmer and don’t hunt and have never had a gun. In the times I have considered getting a shotgun it was on the basis of defending my family and home.

What is it I would be defending them from you ask......people.....people with guns. The irony is not lost on me.

I’ve never gone so far as to buy the gun, but would be lying if I said I had never considered it.

Fear is a dangerous thing and it cuts in many different ways. I’m off to the ale house.

Look, gun control doesn't work in Venezuela, so it won't work in the US. It's best to let the CDC establish the causes of gun crime with all that research they're forbidden from doing and just hang tight in the meantime

Obviously it's other people having guns. To them, owning one is as obvious as having a lock on your front door. They see it as being negligent if you don't have one.

Which, honestly, given the situation they are now in, is completely reasonable. You can't turn the clock back on it - guns exist in spades there now and they always will do.

However, I cannot for the life of me understand why they won't allow several things - firstly, limitations on the type of gun you can buy legally so you're limited to handguns for basic security. Second, rigid checks, extended waiting periods and a registration system so that you make it as difficult as possible for insane people to get hold of them.

Using the driving licence analogy, the way the USA is right now is akin to allowing anyone to jump in a car that can reach speeds of 200mph and legally drive the thing without any training. Through the corridors of a school.

Ill never understand the culture of gun ownership in America. I just find it mind numbingly stupid that guns are so easily available in 2018, particularly in the nation at is supposedly the leaders for the free world. I mean I can sort of understand (even if I still don't approve) why some who live in rough areas or are very isolated in the middle of nowhere might need a small hand gun in case of home invasion or somthing for protection but do you really need those massive obscene rifles and machine guns?!

It's very ironic that some of the strongest second amendment advocates are so blindly willing to ignore logic and reason that they do the very thing that angry extremist fundamentals always do. Cling to an antiquated law in a document written hundreds of years ago and not understand that somthing which was morally correct when said document was first written might not hold up and be correct today?! And will continue to do so regardless of the consequences. It's not even like people are asking them just to totally give up their weapons just start some sort of gun reform. Isn't that similar to what ISIS do when their belief system is threatened?! Refuse to compromise even slightly despite the overwhelming evidence that reform is needed. They will no doubt resort to violence if their "freedom" is threatened even if their supposed "freedom" is harmful to everyone else around them. Utterly crazy.

If you feel the need to own a gun then I pity you. That's all I'm gonna say. I really pity you.

Easy to say sat in England...

If I lived in certain parts of the US I’d 100% have a hand gun in the house for protection, hopefully/probably never use it but if everyone else has one I’m not going to be the only mug without one.

And statistically you'll end up getting shot with your own gun.

Ps

If I was in England I'd get a gun and shoot myself.
