In order to understand the gun debate, we need to first understand why Americans are so scared and what they are scared of. Farmers and hunters can claim a legitimite reason for owning a gun, other than that, the main reason is fear. Why are they so scared they feel the need to own a gun?
Obviously it's other people having guns. To them, owning one is as obvious as having a lock on your front door. They see it as being negligent if you don't have one.
Which, honestly, given the situation they are now in, is completely reasonable. You can't turn the clock back on it - guns exist in spades there now and they always will do.
However, I cannot for the life of me understand why they won't allow several things - firstly, limitations on the
type of gun you can buy legally so you're limited to handguns for basic security. Second, rigid checks, extended waiting periods and a registration system so that you make it as difficult as possible for insane people to get hold of them.
Using the driving licence analogy, the way the USA is right now is akin to allowing anyone to jump in a car that can reach speeds of 200mph and legally drive the thing without any training. Through the corridors of a school.
