How can it reduce the availability when there is already hundreds of millions on circulation ?

' As of today firearms are banned, please jog on down to your local police station and hand in your weapons. Thank you '

Yeah let's see how that goes down.

As it is there are technicalities that allow possession of weapons that by any definition cannot be described as 'for self defence', making them illegal means if found they can be confiscated. Taking profit away reduces the incentive to produce, reducing availability. It's quite simple.
The earlier comparison to grabbing a bag of beak is ludicrous, someone wants to fry their brains there is limited collateral damage until you get to the minutiae, then it becomes economic again.
The alternative is to do what exactly? Maintain the status quo? Follow the NRA vested interest stance? As with narcotics, take away the profit and things change organically.

Your missing the point not all people will find a way...we should try ll means to stop this

Why does ANYONE need an auto/semi auto weapon?

I couldn't honestly tell you why anyone needs an automatic weapon. I should also point out I don't own any kind of weapon, which is why I kind answer your question Neil.

People WILL find a way. You're saying ' not all people will find a way '..... These are not just your normal everyday people though. I very much doubt this guy woke up in his hotel room yesterday and decided to open fire at a large gathering of people.

It's obviously a planned act of violence/domestic terrorism. Something the sick individual decided to do weeks and months ago.

So like I've said, banning firearms wouldn't of stopped this act, and that's the sad truth. He could of easily obtained an illegal/unlicensed/unregistered firearm in the weeks or months he's been planning the thing.

not sure if you're still in Boston but here you can sell them to the cops rather than just handing them in.
Not the ideal solution but a step in the right direction.

Participants in the buyback program who turn in working firearms to any Boston police district station will receive a $200 Visa gift card, police said. The stations will accept guns on weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Guns must be delivered unloaded in clear plastic bags, and any ammunition must be delivered in a separate bag, police said. The person dropping off the gun will not be charged with illegal possession of that specific firearm, but “amnesty will not be given for any other crime.’’

Out of interest, do you think there's anything... peculiar about America's gun use compared to other developed countries?

No they don't. People often don't find a way in every other Western country, resulting in a fraction of the gun deaths per capita compared to the US.

When I say people, I don't mean you or I per se.

A quick google search will tell you that 93% of guns used in gun crimes are illegal.

Maybe not. But put aside todays events, I would wager that more than 10 folk have been shot in the US today. Maybe tons more, havnt a clue.

But do you really think the attitude to/rules relating to, gun ownership in Merica is not worth at least taking a look at to see if perhaps the number of gun related deaths could be reduced?
Way off mate. Shootings that resulted in injury or death but not suicide was roughly 40,000 in 2015. That's over 100 a day.
