It was excruciating to watch. I had to turn it off.

Maybe some hardcore Trumpers were thrilled by it, but even if he keeps every single one of those voters it's not enough to win. He needed to make up some ground, by damaging Biden since no one who is not already with Trump is going to be converted. He failed, miserably, and also damaged his standing with some of his supporters.

there have been only two times in Trump's term where the red-hats in my family and my FB/Twitter feeds have failed to rush to his defense. They were constantly trying to boost him with all the COVID stuff, it's all a lie, need to open up the economy, hydroxycloroquine, all that crap. All of his other bullshit, same. The only two things where they have been completely silent are the revelations about his taxes, and his debate performance. No putting a good face on those, and I think he's going to bleed some support, which he can't afford. He won PA, MI, WI by the barest of margins, 100K total voters across the three states. He has no room to lose anyone. His 2016 voters don't need to vote for Biden, they just have to stay home. If even 5-10% sit this out, he's toast.

Pretty much. Trump basically made a proper debate impossible with his usual antics. Must be like trying to debate an air horn.

The “Biden is senile” narrative didn’t fare well though

Mind you, in all fairness, I think it was Biden who generated the first interruption.....

Pete, it's fairly damning that you're not on here denouncing Trump. You realize he's a racist menace, right?
I always find that a bit weird from many on the right. Priti Patel suggests sending asylum seekers to the middle of the Atlantic- silence. Abbot gets police figures wrong. Derogatory laughter. Trump fails to denounce white supremists - silence. Biden tries to talk over Trump? OMG
I don’t think that all Trump or Tory voters are racist but they never seem keen on admonishing their own.

I think he is odious man of the highest order, a racist prat and someone whom I really would not want to meet in real life. However, faced with a choice of two pillocks I believe the USA is going to pick Trump. USA voters appear to be polarised as never before, and I think that’s a great shame for what is a wonderful country. But similar to some U.K. debates, there appears to be no balance, no admission of another’s point of view. I am genuinely saddened for the USA because I think you are tearing yourselves apart through intolerance of another perspective....just my view......

wow, that's quite a statement.
lets see.
There are some perspectives, like agreeing with racism, xenophobia, homophobia, sexism, class warfare, federal over reach, police brutality, herd immunity that should not be tolerated.
The fact that half the country seems to have been green lighted to go ahead and tolerate these perspectives has us in the mess we're in.

Who would you vote for if you had a vote?

A synopsis of one part of the debate: (Biden) Corporate America isn't paying their fair share so I propose to raise the tax rate from 21% to 28%. (Trump) Joe, you had 47 years to do that. Why didn't you do it? (Biden) Well, we did. You were the one who lowered it to 21%.

Regarding the intolerances of perspective. I'd really be fine with a battle over marginal tax rates or how best to approach providing health care to more citizens more efficiently or other honest policy discussions regarding the best path forward for governing for citizens of this country. What's happening now in the United States is one political party in the country has openly accepted lying, bald-faced lying, as a standard operating procedure. They've embraced denial of science, racial intolerance, religious intolerance, vigilantism and deviations from long-standing historical norms of governance. They can hardly call themselves "conservative" - yet they do.

How does one approach such as being a legitimate perspective? I've literally been told I cannot remember at this point how many times that because I am left-leaning that I am not an American (I'm a 6'1" reasonably fit middle-aged white man of reasonable means). How in the world does one find "balance" in the face of this?

It would be easy to say neither, but that’s a cop out. If I were a US citizen I would probably vote Biden. However as a U.K. citizen I would probably prefer Trump as I think he is more pro U.K. than Biden.....

Biden was old, disjointed, and incoherent. He didn't have a good debate. But he certainly wasn't a pillock.
He was trying to debate with a whirling vortex of cat vomit.
Exactly.

Just look at Trumps supporters reactions to things and how deluded and cult like its all become.

Example friend of mine text me a Trump supporter. He said to me sarcastically how presidential Biden was when he told Trump to shut up.

I mean that was his whole take away. Not the fact Trump was a 12 year old the whole time speaking out of turn and pretty much not answering anything being asked other than to repeat the tired old points he makes.

But yeah Biden telling him to shut up was outrageous.
