hang on, who are we talking about here, Blacks, Latinos, gays, Native Americans, Muslims, immigrants, women? They believe that stuff because they were disenfranchised for decades.

no?
white dudes with pickup trucks... Americas disenfranchised... god love them, they've had a hard time of it.
They were ready to be trumps disciples well before Clinton called them deplorable. They believe that stuff because they were disenfranchised for decades.
You had Clinton call them "deplorables" and it reinforced everything they believes about their status in US political life. They were ready to be Trump's disciples from then on.
If you continue to basically call them deplorables then you are clearing the way for Trump again in four years, or someone even worse. Because you're right, that's the situation that we're at that is right for authoritarianism. But you're wrong in that it's too late - it's not, there just has to be some common sense instead of non-stop alienisation.h
As far as addressing those who voted for Cheeto, hearing their economic concerns and focusing on them - I'm good. Like really, really good. They don't need to be "deprogrammed" - they need to be listened to and not discarded to one side and dismissed as basket cases.
The sooner people learn that "us vs. them" just results in more "us vs. them" the better.
There's a quote I like, I've no idea who said it.Thats what I dont get. They seem to have enough money for big trucks, guns, and waist lines.
You have to understand it from their point of view. They're desperate. They feel disenfranchised, completely unlistened to, desperate to belong to something aspirational. They are generally poorly educated and with few life chances beyond the few square miles they grew up in.
You don't fix the situation by laughing at them. You fix the situation by reaching out and improving their lot in life.
great post!As far as addressing those who voted for Cheeto, hearing their economic concerns and focusing on them - I'm good. Like really, really good.
How, though, do you reason with people who cannot get on board with condemning folks who wish to kidnap a Governor and kill her or as Plan B have 200 folks take over the Statehouse and murder elected officials over days and do so on television or as Plan C burn the Statehouse to the ground with legislators inside? How do you reason with people who believe Kyle Rittenhouse a political prisoner or believe will all sincerity that Democrats eat the babies they do not want to abort? How do you reason with people who believe that mandating the wearing of a mask in public to help prevent the spread of a highly contagious virus is the end of "freedom in America"?
May seem like I'm picking fringe examples but these ARE NOT fringe ideas within the minds of the GOP base voter. Some of them are why the Governor of Texas is outright refusing to address the explosion of COVID in this state. It's not that he's incapable of understanding the science. It's not that he is incapable of understanding the suffering the citizens of this state are experiencing. The short of it is, he is politically afraid of the GOP base that I described. That fear renders him incapable of screaming from the rooftop of the need for Federal assistance and leadership.
The GOP has told its voters that Government is the problem. Now that there is a need for leadership from the Government they look at a base that not only discounts science and math but the majority of whom believe the election was rigged. By fellow Republicans in charge of elections in swing states. But only on the Presidential side!
Whaaa??
The Democrats have ZERO chance of fighting in this battlefield and winning. None. It's burned, salted and irradiated for, quite possibly, generations. Where they do have a chance at having a conversation and winning a few votes is with pocketbook issues and less distraction with cultural ones. That's the focus. That's the common ground.

lol Yeah I wonder why we’re not seeing huge swathes of minorities going to the Trump marches. It’s more about feeling that their privileged white status is under threat.hang on, who are we talking about here, Blacks, Latinos, gays, Native Americans, Muslims, immigrants, women?
no?

A lot of people at events such as this (see the same thing over here) is them saying ‘they’ve done their research’ In fact they’ve followed a load of algorithm suggested links on YouTube, Facebook etc. That's the thing Tubes. People who insist the election was rigged and take to the street with MAGA hats and guns probably aren't arsed either way and listening to them isn't going to disabuse them of all the massive falsehoods they have been fed for years.
They are steeped in confrontationalism, moreso than any part of that society. They want Trump declared president, he either wins the election or it's a fake election. Even a great champion of centrism like yourself wouldn't find a middle ground there. It isn't their fault, they have been pummelled with an almost laughably skewed narrative for decades, but that's where they are now.
I reckon it's too late personally, the wheel is turning on this and they are ripe for authoritarianism as soon as the right person comes along
THISThey were ready to be trumps disciples well before Clinton called them deplorable.
If you don't call them out, they'll walk all over you.
Here's the thing, after the litany of crimes Trump committed, including his handling of Covid which has left 1/4 million Americans dead, more people voted for him than did in 16. And there was no 'I hate Clinton so I went for Trump' vote.
Many tried to reason with them, but there's only so much 'Jews will not replace us' and confederate flags one can be expected to take, and that amount is zero.
