They don't need to be "deprogrammed" - they need to be listened to and not discarded to one side and dismissed as basket cases.

The sooner people learn that "us vs. them" just results in more "us vs. them" the better.
you could argue that they have been listened to and now we have neo Nazis and Qanon believers in the house of representatives.

That's the thing Tubes. People who insist the election was rigged and take to the street with MAGA hats and guns probably aren't arsed either way and listening to them isn't going to disabuse them of all the massive falsehoods they have been fed for years.

They are steeped in confrontationalism, moreso than any part of that society. They want Trump declared president, he either wins the election or it's a fake election. Even a great champion of centrism like yourself wouldn't find a middle ground there. It isn't their fault, they have been pummelled with an almost laughably skewed narrative for decades, but that's where they are now.

I reckon it's too late personally, the wheel is turning on this and they are ripe for authoritarianism as soon as the right person comes along

The problem is that many of them are indeed basket cases. Just today they were protesting in Atlanta many of them holding Q and "stop stealing the vote" signs. So how can one rationalize with them and come up with solutions together when these people are living in conspiracy land

Maybe they should give the election to Trump as an olive branch, and agree to disagree that Trump is waging a secret war on a global paedophile ring. I'm sure the healing can begin then

As a Brit, where we have seen similar, if not as dangerous, (no guns) sort of behaviour re Brexit, what is it that "they" want? Cos other than the orange man child, I dont get it.

The way forward is for responsible republicans to stand up and be counted. Sure, some republican governors in blue states have, but republicans need to stand up to Trumpism and say 'it's not alright, it's pulling America apart'. But there's too many Linsay Grahams out there and too many Dianne Feinstein's empowering them.
Exactly. THAT's the only way forward. But if that doesn't happen, what other option do we have?

It's not something that Democrats can fix. It's not something that Democrats just need to "hear the conservative point of view". We've over the rainbow on that.

The ball is in the Republicans' court. It's up to them that the country gets back on the path to normalcy

They believe that stuff because they were disenfranchised for decades.

You had Clinton call them "deplorables" and it reinforced everything they believes about their status in US political life. They were ready to be Trump's disciples from then on.

If you continue to basically call them deplorables then you are clearing the way for Trump again in four years, or someone even worse. Because you're right, that's the situation that we're at that is right for authoritarianism. But you're wrong in that it's too late - it's not, there just has to be some common sense instead of non-stop alienisation.

It is truly confusing. Many of the people that voted for him were getting hurt by his policies, and that of Republicans, but they still vote against their interest because they rather to hold onto conspiracy theories that have not founding at all. Trump's tendency to bend the truth has also become so widely accepted among his supporters that facts no longer matter to a certain segment of the population. For ffs some of his people are even questioning the earth being round. And while I know it is not everyone it is a large enough segment to make one worry about where our country and society are heading.

You have to understand it from their point of view. They're desperate. They feel disenfranchised, completely unlistened to, desperate to belong to something aspirational. They are generally poorly educated and with few life chances beyond the few square miles they grew up in.

You don't fix the situation by laughing at them. You fix the situation by reaching out and improving their lot in life.

So like Brexit then.

Sound. Reasoned argument dismissed as crap. cos it didnt fit a pre agreed agenda that was built of nationalistic nonsense.

Good luck.
