Hypocrisy is everywhere. Everyone’s favorite AOC condemned large real estate developers, then used her $170k+/year salary to move into one of those very large luxury developments, complete with things like onsite massage, rooftop pool, and concierge, and then defended being criticized for doing it by saying luxuries like she gets at her complex should be basic human rights. Get out of here with lecturing if you yourself won’t back it up with personal actions. Politicians are the worst.

Such a hypocrite!! How dare we criticise or question something!!

Are you saying that people who are rich can’t fight for equality? Do you think it’s ok for Marcus Rashford to talk about free school meals?

and have you seen her ‘luxury’ apartment? It’s not Trump tower ffs. It’s like one of those many many blocks you’d find in Mile End or all over east London. It’s not ‘luxury’ at all. The point she made was we deem these things to be luxury when comparing it to some of the abject poverty that others live in. But the standard of living should be raised so that everyone experiences an apartment like that.

Not at all. But she slated developers and real estate lobbyists who don’t offer affordable housing and force people out of their neighborhoods through gentrification and then decided she wanted to live in one of those very places complete with saunas, golf simulators, a lap pool, on-site massage, etc. if you’re successful and want to enjoy it while still doing good, that’s wonderful. I just don’t think someone saying, “Here’s what’s wrong and I’m against it...” and then going and giving those same people who don’t offer affordable housing and are doing what you’re criticizing money is consistent messaging...

If they can't afford food, they must be racist simpletons.

PS: Vote For Me!

Cut to a clip of Nancy Pelosi in front of her $24,000 ice cream-only freezer boasting about girlbossing the Covid rescue bill off the agenda until February.

While we all enjoy a glib post every so often, and I have even indulged in them, the backstory to Abe's recent cleverness has nothing to do with racist ascriptions--that seems to have come from Abe's mind--but it does have a lot to do with the Republican war on food stamps/food assistance. Hence the tweet by Pam Keith.

And whether Pelosi owns an expensive freezer or not is a dumb thing to bring up. I'm certain Abe is wealthier than the person who cleans his house on Thursday mornings, but this doesn't mean he is indifferent or hypocritical in supporting the less wealthy.

More simply, most politicians will always be richer than their constituents. This was true of Clinton, Obama, Trump. The difference is whether those politicians generally vote in favor of improving the lives of the impoverished or not. As a rule, Republicans have a poor track record on giving a crap about poor people or hunger. (And yes, Obama did bail out big banking so I'm aware of the corporate Democrat stuff).

Here is some context about Trump and other Republicans:

And here are a few of Pelosi's votes on this issues. Remember: she owns an expensive freezer.

People are happy to slate the sun and still watch sky. Is that hypocritical do you think?

Tbh being a yank I don’t know near enough about that relationship to comment. My point in bringing it up initially was to point out that even those politicians who are meant to be warriors of the people will generally act in their own self interest. Basically “Ill say A but I’ll only really do it if that thing doesn’t inconvenience me too much.” She’s a self declared socialist but wanted a raise on her 170k+ salary even though she’s new. Maybe we use those tax payer dollars for better social good purposes than increasing her already substantially above average pay?

well to explain, people in Liverpool boycott the sun, which is owned by Rupert murdock and many of those people will have sky. Giving money to the person who also owns the sun newspaper. Is that hypocritical?

Re AOC, that’s not quite all the facts is it?
She’s asking for her salary, and the minimum wage, to be pegged to inflation. Seeing as though congressional members haven’t had a raise for 10 years. Which is in effect a 15% pay cut during that time.

Do you think it’s fair that politicians get a high salary? Doctors? Architects? What about footballers?

What’s the level of salary where it’s safe to talk about inequality without being hypocritical?

I could argue that yes it is a little hypocritical but in a less direct way since they’re still separate entities. Theyre not saying the sun is evil and then still going out and buying it. They’re also not lecturing to millions when they complain about the sun, unless GOTs following has really exploded :)

AOC asking for her salary, that of a public servant, which is already in the top 6-7% of the entire country to be pegged for inflation while also saying close the income gap, and saying increase minimum wage are hardly the same thing are they? Maybe if they work on fixing our deficit problems they can have a little more tax payer money? Maybe they were wildly overpaid 10 years ago...

And arguing public and private salaries is an interesting position to take. If she wants to more, like top doctors, architects, and footballers, then she’s welcome to join the private sector like they’ve done. Their salaries are generally commensurate with the demand their employers have for their services.

This could be a fun little debate but maybe there’s a thread more appropriate for it?

Doctors are public sector here mate. That’s why I made the comparison.

Politicians *should* be paid a lot of money. It’s a difficult and complex job.

Let’s flip it around shall we. What do you think about politicians that get paid a lot of money but then vote against policies that promote equality?

is your problem simplify that politicians get paid a lot of money? I don’t have a problem with that

How do you feel about Marcus Rashford talking about school meals when he gets paid almost double what AOC gets paid in a year, in a week?

why do you think it’s unfair to talk about gentrification of communities but still live in a nice house?

(the sun and sky aren’t separate entities. They are part of the same group. They are owned by the same people)

I’d say our politicians are paid a lot of money, again they’re in the top 6% of everyone in the entire country. I’d also say Rashford is using his platform for a great thing, but he’s also seemingly walking the walk, isn’t he? He’s not saying fix school lunch issues and then contributing to the problem is he? No, he’s helping it and backing up his words. It’s not about money. It’s about consistency.

It’s not unfair to do that at all. But saying a group is evil and you’ll stand up against them and then contributing to the problem you say you’re against directly is inconsistent for me. There aren’t any housing developers offering good conditions that also offer affordable housing and haven’t pushed people out? Part of her platform, ya know...

I admit I’m likely making a mini mountain out of a molehill, but I’m very much not convinced she’s as virtuous and for the people as her public perception seems to imply. Rather, she is when it’s not inconvenient for her. Same as most other politicians in that regard.

Compare the salaries of Congresspersons to the cost of living in DC and the fact that Congress itself has denied a COLA they are entitled to by law every year since 2008.

I like DC. Lots of amazing things going on there and there are actual seasons there rather than 2-3 mild months and 9-10 months of hotter than hell as is the case where I reside. But I wouldn't move to DC for $175k/yr to do that job and it's a shame, IMO, we ask people we hope to be among the best and brightest to work on our behalf to do so.

Yes, cost of living is high there, but they do also get perks and annual tax breaks for doing so. Also not a fan of entitlement arguments like that one. There’s also a good chance I’m just sick of all of them these days.

The cost of living argument is an interesting one though. How do you feel about federal minimum wage? Cost of living is often used as a counter argument for the $15 minimum since as you say, that $15 in Wyoming is drastically different than $15 in New York or SF so why should they be regulated the same? I think it’s a tough one myself.

Market values for services that include cost of living isn't what I'd deem an entitlement argument. But frustration with the Fed Govt is certainly understandable.

My thought on minimum wage is that it ought to be tied to regional cost of living and re-calculated every year or so. The goal being to reward work with the dignity of being able to pay one's own way without subsidy from local/state/federal programs.
