Kinnear has a key role in transfer strategy as a balance to
Moyes and a support to the recruitment specialists. He should not be telling anyone which specific players to buy but he should be making it clear:
1. How much total we can invest in annual amortisation (which infers fees and contract lengths) and wages plus add-ons, agent fees, image rights etc.
2. Whether this assumes any planned/assumed sales and if so what
3. Some guidance on investment strategy including how that investment should ideally be spread in age tiers between academy and eg 21-24, 25-27, 28+ (he goes through with the others including
Moyes and gets collective buy in if possible but if he has to set rules so be it)
4. Some guidance on the commercial/marketing ‘sweet spots’ for new signings eg do we want a marquee name? Are we targeting specific markets or demographics commercially? None of this would be prescriptive (eg not going to say we must buy an American or buy someone with a huge social following in u23s etc.) but it might inform a decision between two equally rated ‘football best fit’ players
It will be interesting to see if the new Committee set up can run smoothly or whether it will be divisive. It is a normal way to operate in industry and TFG has experience balancing disparate views and egos in TV/movies so fingers crossed.
