We were linked before he moved to Southampton.

The amber flag is that Southampton sent him on loan rather than using him. However, they also did the same with Alcaraz.

Looks a decent ball winner and when he receives the ball seems to drive forward or pick a forward pass...per youtube.

Weird one that. Can only assume Southampton genuinely started the season thinking their cavalier style would see them surviving semi-comfortably, so thought this was a good development move. In the same way as it took them til Xmas to realise they were far far too crap to fanny around in their own six yard box with the ball and were already relegated. Naive club and stubborn manager with far too much “stick to our philosophy” and get routinely battered.
