Steven Pienaar

The hope is that he can stay fit.
I always thought that Pienaar was a naturally athletic person and am surprised by how badly he has been affected by injuries over the last two or three seasons. He has even retired from international football for a while.

Probably because he was the most fouled player in the PL.

I really do love Steven Pienaar, but I feel that his best days may be behind him.

The magic on the left with him and Bainsey kept 40,000 Everton fans on the edge of their seats for the best part of 5 years.

What top wingers have we had since Kanchelskis though? Mirallas and Deulofeu stand out as opposed to Kilbane for example....

I'd personally say Deulofeu is the most exciting since Kancho...Pienaar wasnt 'exciting' even at his peak on a consistent basis...as has been said before 'assisting the assister'...

Honestly think it was the other way round. Others who have tried that left wing spot have looked poor even with Baines behind them. Even Baines Mirallas wasn't a great combo. Meanwhile Oviedo looked good behind Pienaar. Offensively and defensively Pienaar has been the best wide player I've seen for Everton since Kanchelskis but because he's not a wannabe Ronaldo type he doesn't get any where near enough credit. Even now he's still probably technically the best player in the side.

Pienaar was amazing for us in his prime. Much better than Deulofeu has ever been for us.

It's not about being exciting, it's about fitting a role that engages a forward play - and Pienaar does that better than anyone else I have ever seen in the royal blue. (bare in mind I'm only 22)

Maybe its just me but i want excitement when watching a winger....which is why for me players with limited end product such as Lennon or McGeady seem pointless....Pienaar isnt really a traditional winger though of course, more of a 'link man'.

Deulofeu is pretty exciting and only more to come....

Best football I've seen since Kanch was Pienaar and Baines. If that wasn't exciting I don't know what is. It's not always about goals. Del is great when he's in full flight but he's dependent on getting good service from the midfield. Pienaar influences the game far more than Deulofeu or Mirallas who are archetypal wing forwards rather than playmakers.

Lets say 30 yards from goal...2 defenders to beat, i'd be on the edge of my seat awaiting a Kanchelskis net breaker....thats exciting as was seeing him in full flight charging directly at goal...

For me that was a real superstar winger...and i think Deulofeu has something like that in him, he has the pace and perhaps 'guile' rather than 'power' which will only improve.

Pienaar for me was rarely an 'edge of the seat' player...his linkups with Baines were of course exciting but as an INDIVIDUAL player i dont put him in the same category for excitement as a Kancho or Deulofeu...

On a different note, i wonder how Yarmolenko (if signed) would do with Baines behind him? Would he be able to have the same telepathic understanding with Baines?

How would he compare to pienaar?

One of my favourites is stevie p over the last 5 years but he really is finding it hard to get fit.
We have deffo seen the best of him

Pienaars absolutely finished now, but he's done more for us than Deulofeu ever has. Extremely talented player, just lacked pace.

But had better ball control than deulofeu easily.

But, let's hope deulofeu over the years can make more of a impact.
