I would like to see the whole St end go back to terraces, but that ain't gonna happen and I think just having a small section is a bit silly, so I voted no.

Out of interest why do you think it's a bad idea? I can understand if someone does not feel that it is for them, but I do think it is a very good idea

I didn't say it was a bad idea. I asked why bad idea wasn't an option in his poll when 'good idead' was. The poll is geared towards it being a good idea in that 2/3rds of the options support it being a good idea.

My own opinion is that all clubs are in the same boat, and yet certain clubs are much livelier than others, proving it's not the seating arrangements that make a club quiet, but the fans. Not everyone who goes to matches can stand up throughout the game. Should those that want to sing, but are perhaps disabled, or elderly miss the match through others standing around them and blocking their view?

I just think it's the mentality of a Wigan or a Bolton to do 'singing sections'. Small clubs with no atmosphere forcing a singsong in a 'singing section'.

It seems artificial and wrong to me.

We may not sing as much as we could, but we watch the match and whenever we disagree with a bad decision from a ref or something of note happens, there is noone better than Everton fans for making a shout about it; eg Neville tackle on Ronaldo last season

As for standing, it will never work, health and safety will make sure of that. I just think things should be left the way they are, as i said, when we need to be, Evertonians are loud

I fail to see what other clubs have got to do with it. If it makes you feel better Celtic have one. All the 'big' Italian clubs have it organised via the clubs too. But I personally couldn't care less whether Marine or Real Madrid have one. It's irrelevant to me.

There is nothing artificial about standing up. Everton had terracing on all 4 sides upto 1991. In it's the other round if anything. Fans can be naturally stood up anyway and want to remain like that but are being told to sit for differing reasons.

So the sitting down that is being forced on them that is creating the artificial silent atmosphere.

We don't always get the atmosphere when it's needed. We get the atmosphere when something of note happens as that gets everyone on their feet, all league games are 3 pointers so it always matters. There's no point having an atmosphere if you're 3 up. You need it when you are in a tight game v Bolton.

Health and safety has concerns with standing in upper tiers and in very steep stands. So as long as it's neither then there isn't a health and safety issue.

No even during terracing the main singers were only in the hundreds with the rest joining in depending on the match situation. So it'll be similar now.

Other teams are livelier due to their standing and their numbers.

Note also the request is for a section standing at the back of a stand so those who wish to sit can do.

The rest of the fans are still seated though. You're trying to equate the two and it doesn't make sense.
If the 300 stand or sit and start singing, the other 6000 are only going to join in if they feel like and because they're sitting down they probably won't.
So whether you have a standing section or not, you're still in the same boat because the vast majority are still seated.

I'm not that fussed about a so-called singing section as such, but would like to see small standing areas with capacity strictly controlled. I would never want to see those great banks of terracing return. Standing isn't dangerous - we do it all the time. But thousands & thousands of people on one bank of terracing is tremendously dangerous. It just seems to me that we've gone from one extreme to another - an understandable "knee-jerk reaction" after Hillsborough, but still an over-reaction.

That 300 are getting the songs going though, trying out new songs, and bringing a bit more life to the place, 300 can make a good noise.

Many fans only like to sing when everyone else is. So if that 300 are making a noise it can attract some sit downers to join in who are nearby. So that's 400 up on none singing.

As they're also trying out new songs the rest will hear them, and learn the words so that when they're stood they'll know it to join in with it.

The singing can help in other ways too. When you're struggling the crowd can be quick to get on the players back, the singing can overpower that for an extended period of time and create a more positive atmosphere for a longer period for the players.

Good post, I agree.

I'm not interested in a standing section for thousands either. It's ok for big games/big moments for extended periods having your whole End stood, but there's no point thousands and thousands constantly because you won't see the benefit singing wise beyond a few hundred all game anyway.

so are you suggesting we have a "bad idea, will work" option to balance it out?

put the disabled and elderly in the front of the standing section if they want to sing along, simple solution really. At DC United games we have 2 or 3 singing sections where everyone stands up, sitting down at a DC game just seems unthinkable. Plus the team loves us (our section), players come over and celebrate with us, and usually toss a shirt in the crowd after every game.

its easy to cheer when your team does something good, i don't think it takes a passionate fan to cheer when their team scores, singing sections demonstrate their constant, sustained support.
