Current Affairs Stabbing incident in Southport

Some foreign news outlets have named the person and claimed he arrived to the UK on a boat last year amongst other things.

Turns out that may not be true.
He may well have been born in Cardiff, moved elsewhere and then migrated back here last year. In the scheme of things it’s a minor detail, but we know the right wing Twitter bellends will use any sniff of a non-white perpetrator as an excuse to peddle the “stop the boats” nonsense.

When the overriding concern is finding an excuse to be openly racist, rather than concern for the victims and families, it’s extremely telling about the utter hellscape we find ourselves living in.

But also, let's not use something like this to point score against others either.

Totally, but it just seems weird when it's meant to be a direct quote of her statement but they literally change a key part of it in the updated text version.
'Originally from [born in] Cardiff' would be the correct way of doing it, but hey ho... it's an ongoing, complex investigation and I suspect it was done in good faith.

And @LostLegend, there's a plethora of people who will be happy to fuel this nonsense because it incites division and/or will be lapped up by the narrow-minded.

It doesn't have to be correct because once it's out there, they'll keep spouting it; I'm already dreading the quotes tomorrow from the knuckle-dragging Daily Mail.

I can't believe I am saying this, but even Paul Golding (of Britain First) is pointing out that the cops will never release the name of a suspect under 18 and so anyone claiming they know the name is posting fake news.

I won't post the link to it for obvious reasons.

Oh, absolutely. There’s always a corresponding faction desperate for the perpetrator to be white so they can dunk on the right wingers.

Wanting to understand the motive - if one exists - is one thing, but the general obsession with race and religion doesn’t sit right.

In any case, keeping fingers crossed for the little ones (and the adults ofc) still battling away.

Another real concern is escalating violence. There have been a lot of protests at migrant hotels and whatnot in the past few years that have turned nasty.
With the Manchester Airport incident, it's easy pickings for people who want to stir up and inflame racial tensions. It looks like certain people have jumped on this unconfirmed and possibly false info regarding the suspect - I just hope that things don't boil over. It doesn't help anybody.

Mate, as we both know, unless there are exceptional circumstances, there's no way a judge will lift the reporting order until he's either found guilty and/or 18.

The name will end up in the foreign media once he's charged, yet any use of it here would be asking for the person to be held in contempt.

Why don't we all just wait for the official statements from police before speculating. Leave twitter rumours alone - it's full of hate, deliberate manipulation and nonsense.

The focus shouldn't be on the perpetrator, we should not be speculating on age, race, religion. Let the police, and whoever else is involved, do their work.

Our effort and attention should be on supporting those impacted, the responders, the community and the families.

Bravo, mate! We have two families whose lives will be irrevocably shattered due to their loss - mothers, fathers, sisters, grandparents, uncles etc. It's unimaginable.

Likewise, there are the families of those who are seriously injured who'll live with the burden of this forever, and then all those who've witnessed the horrors.

Right now, there are probably over a hundred people whose lives have been turned upside down, and they should be our priority.

Amen 🙏

And kids who will know them, famililies who will know them, the community centre staff, responders, volunteers who have helped, the 999 call handlers, first responders, doctors and nurses, mortuary staff, comms teams, police custody staff, mental health staff...the list will be huge.

A massive amount of psychological support will be needed.
