Sir Landon Of Donovan

I wouldn't be as quick to speak for LD. The LA Galaxy situation has some attraction for LD. He is essentially responsible for the resurgence of the team, having put Grumpy and AEG in their places and working under one of his favorite managers, Bruce Arena. The Galaxy are essentially LD's team.

Secondly, he has to realize that his preparation at the Galaxy made it possible for him to drop right in on an EPL team and be successful right away.

Thirdly, the Galaxy have an opportunity to win the CONCACAF Champions League and go to the World Club Championships. The Galaxy are set up well to compete in these competitions. They lost in overtime to Pachuca (Mexico), which won the third place game in Japan.

So as attractive as the chance to play in EPL is to LD, he signed the four year deal with the Galaxy for some very good reasons. He'll have to turn his back on all those things to stay at Merseyside. Either way he will feature on the World Cup team, and quite frankly, I don't think his performance in South Africa will be much different, whatever happens.

We shall see.

Having lived in florida a few years I watched the MLS and it's a shockingly poor standard of football and passion, after playing in such a high standard league and playing in such a good team and in front of us He will think twice about going back to the Galaxy, he even said he would consider joining us

We shall see. I found it very interesting that he could drop right in and contribute, even though not fit, and score a typical LD goal in the third game. He did all of that after playing a "shockingly poor standard of football." That same standard of football took the Copa Libertadores champions to penalty kicks. The same standard that saw Grumpy (Beckham) drop right in to AC Milan two years in a row and make an impact.

Wigan looked a lot like an MLS team to me. Focus on disrupting the opposition and try to pinch a goal or two. MLS to a tee.

Again I say, we shall see. I would not be surprised if he stays, but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes back to LA.

Beckham had years of international and european experience to help him at Ac milan and Donovan was playing at international level and putting in top performances against Italy,Mexico and Brazil before he came here so I don't think their performances were to do with the MLS

I agree with you but even thou the MLS is not at the same level as the EPL or La Liga or Serie A, it is very physical and full of athletes with pace and strength, so I'm sure that in terms physicality it is nothing new to Landon. The only and HUGE difference is the talent.

WHEN? If you are speaking of the era of Valderrama and Mamadou Diallo, things have changed a little.
Player awe gave CV lots of space to work. Wouldnt happen today.
And Diallo would spend half the season suspended due to Reds

Well, which is it? You seem to be of two minds.
Of freaking COURSE the Prem's a clearly better league and higher standard of play..

I have lived in south Fl for 23 years and watched the Miami Fusion, which was only around for about 3 years begining in 1998, when CV did play. Don't think that I have ever seen a CM distribute the ball from a static position before or since. Above poster is correct. Crappy soccer, which is why the team folded. What appeared on paper to be a good idea, (professional soccer in an area with a large hispanic population), did not work out so well. That population was not going to go see and support that level of soccer. Level has gone up some from back then.

I would not be surprised to see LD stay. Depends on how much he wants it. A cheaper price does not mean that he could not make it up in the states on endorsements.

Less than 10% of Donovan's games have been International or at big clubs. I don't think you can dismiss the influence of MLS so lightly. Perhaps it was the MLS that made the international and big club opportunities possible for him.

As for Grumpy, around 35% of his games were International or Milan in the past 2 years. Obviously MLS didn't cause any kind of decline in his abilities. Not saying the MLS is at the standard of EPL or Serie A, but pointing out that it had a significant impact on LD's development and it didn't hurt Grumpy.

I am also observing that the newly promoted EPL teams often play a lot like MLS teams.

Dunno, Landon would have to do more for me to prove hes the right long term option IMO.

Nzogbia gave a lesson yesterday in what a player with pace, skill and quality can do - to be honest i would be leaning more toward him then Landon. Theres more to come im sure - so i havent cast my final vote yet.

A big test will be when his loan runs out and if he will extend it.

Absolutely agree. He may not be worth as much to Everton in the end as he is to MLS. He came back well from a mediocre performance in the FA Cup tie. Now we'll see how he does after an under par performance on two days rest.

The EPL isn't just about raising your game occasionally. It is about being at top quality on short rest. He isn't completely fit yet, so there are a lot of questions still to be answered in my mind.

The money being asked will probably make it impossible for him to be a squad player, and a loan extension is not part of his agreement with MLS, so it will have to be a sale.

agreed, I think we need to see Donovan perform on a consistent basis before deciding whether he's worth the fee the MLS would ask.

Three out of four games he has been consistent I would say. Have you seen teams hanging off of him afraid of his pace. The only team that didn't was Brum and they frogstrangled our whole squad not just Donovan. Forget the MLS. Think about Drogba and a Ivory Coast league or Adebayor and the Togo first division you get my drift.
