Sir Landon Of Donovan

Im sure 1 of the American new boys suggested there was a release clause, time will tell I suppose, early doors yet, lets start worrying about these things in March and enjoy his time for now.

All in good fun. Actually I think the British chanting USA is extremely over the top hilarious.

I went over to England when we were in the FA Cup semi-final last season. Couldn't get a ticket so I ended up watching in a London pub. There was about a dozen Evertonians there with me and after Howard made his saves in the shootout they started chanting 'USA! USA!'. Hilarious! Great times.

Jozy "frigging" Altidore went for $10M. I don't think MLS would of put themselves in position to let Landon go for anything close to that. Landon is the face of MLS so yes, you are correct, they will inflate the price with hopes he stays in LA. Just my opinion of course.

Buying Jozy for $10mm was a disaster for Villareal and shouldn't be used as an example. I read somewhere that that Jozy was on the list of the top 10 disappointments in La Liga last season. You don't buy "projects" for $10mm and stay in business unless you are a club like Barca/Madrid/ManU....

Re: Donovan, I don't think MLS has any say in this matter anymore. I'm making most of this stuff up, but I think this all makes logical sense.

When MLS re-upped Donovan, he had two years left on his deal and the threat that he could play out his deal and leave for nothing. Donovan never would have signed a four year extension just to get the $2mm a year salary. He did it to get control over his own exit. By Grant Wahl's report, he's negotiated a fixed buyout price in the new deal which makes perfect sense. Since $10mm was the price that MLS reportedly gave Bayern, that's what everyone assumes is the number. I think this number was the key to Donovan signing the new deal. Donovan knew that if he did well at Everton and the World Cup that MLS could jack up his price under the old deal (like you speculate they will do). So while this new buyout may be a little higher than $10mm, it's not going to be $20mm. In fact, I would guess that the number starts at $10-12mm but drops considerable around the 2nd year (which is when he could have gone for free had he not re-upped).

IMO, MLS's key short term sticking point was likely that they want Donovan back in March so they don't have to sell season tickets with both Becks and Donovan gone for the first half of 2010. So I speculate the fixed buyout provision isn't in effect until July 2010. But I think they view Donovan leaving as inevitable and that Donovan had them by the short-hairs. The PR description of the "4-year extension" was really just putting lipstick on the pig.

So, from Everton's perspective, I'm guessing they can send Donovan back after the loan ends in March but buy him for for $10-12 mm over the summer, or they could enter into a negotiation where they offer to pay more and keep him straight through (which would probably need some creative structuring outside the transfer window).

Like Peanut he'll never be good enough because he couldn't cut it in Germany. :D

RW is his weakest midfield position and he hasn't played it in over a year as well. He's better center left but at least at RW now we can mount an attack on the right side and the Baines-Landon linkup is pretty.

confusing me with this agree with the rest though

Does anybody else believe we as a club can convince Donovan that his future lies at Goodison?

I know he's here for 3 months, but we have to be able to force the issue. Give him the option.

Latest from bookface...

Good evening from a slightly warmer England! I've spent the day resting and recovering from an incredible game last night. That was in the top 5 of the most memorable games in my career. Thank you so much to all the Everton fans for making me feel right at home! It's been nice to enjoy the victory today but tomorrow we start preparing for Birmingham in the FA Cup. Goodnight!

Absolutely LOVING all of the Americans signing up on the best Everton forum in existence.

Mountaineer Pride: My business partner is a WVA alum and is really excited about the basketball team this season, even if you did lose by one to Syracuse yesterday. He keeps me up to date on the team and the players.

Suspect (and hope) it has already been mentioned, but he seems rock solid so far with corners. Real breath of fresh air to have every corner beating the first man every time.

I think with Moyes, Everton has a key ingredient in having a shot at keeping Donovan. It seems with LD, being comfortable in his surroundings is very important for his state of mind. That doesn't mean he is a prima donna, just that he plays his best when he has a positive feeling of things. Everton has one of the best with Moyes.

The financials will be interesting and are obviously critical to how this works out. Donovan is the face of MLS and so they value him accordingly. Is the value something Everton would agree to? It will be interesting to see if the value becomes revealed - $10 million seems to be the rumored amount when he loaned at Bayern. Then there is his current $2 million/yr salary. I suspect that if a transfer could be worked out, it wouldn't be until the summer as LA will be keen on using LD to sell season tickets for upcoming season.

Last, there is Liverpool vs California. I think he would prefer a warm spot but this might not be as important now that he has split up with his actress wife/significant other or whatever she was and to whom staying in LA was important. I think he wants to test himself on a bigger stage than MLS if everything can be worked out. While I believe he would like for things to work out, he probably isn't desperate to make it happen as things could be worse than making
$2 million /yr, living in LA while playing domestic and international football.

It does look like Donovan could be a good fit for Everton. As you can see, he has loads of pace and is a team player willing to do his part defending as well as going forward. When he regains his full fitness, he will be even more impressive. I agree that MLS matches do not require the same fitness requirements as in the Prem, but if you have ever watched Donovan in international matches, you have a much better idea of what his fitness level can be. He sold me at Kaiserslautern in WC '06 when the US with 9 men drew Italy with 10 and there was no doubt in my mind that he covered more ground than anyone else in that match, making immense sprints, and was critical in securing the draw.

One other thing about Donovan is that he rarely misses matches due to injury. That has to be a plus for any club looking to invest a significant amount of money in a player.

I think we should all donate to a "Fro fund" and stick a giant Fro on everyone in the Box for Landon's corners. Although, that might confuse him with too many targets!

Been an Everton supporter for a few years. I am a season ticket holder for the KC Wiz in MLS. I have been playing "soccer" for 25 years and have my tv locked to Fox Soccer Channel.

The issue with LD and DB has been explained as something LD regretes not being face to face with DB and they have worked through it. As an earlier post stated it was more about inter-club issues than it was LD/DB issues.

The re-up contract by LD/LA Galaxy/MLS was a way for the MLS to cover their ass. Yes I have heard there is a buyout clause. Similar to what DB had to do to stay at ACM last season.

Landon came to Everton because Beckham told him to go.

Now with his play and the extent of his loan. I have been pretty happy with how he is blending. A couple of talking points... (1) He has had a few months off (2) It is a completely different class (3) Moyes has trusted him enough to take corners (4) he has not been with or around the club for more than a couple of weeks

(1) He is dedicated and will get back to match fit asap if he isn't there already.
(2) Donovan has shown in the MLS that he is too good to stay there. If that means he is ready for the EPL only the 10 week loan will tell.
(3) I don't know if this is due to LD's skills or GOT's injuries or a combination.
(4) Another thing that will work itself out soon. Right now there are some passes and runs that are not as precise as the Prem requires. But it will come (or it wont and he will be back to the MLS).

As an American Footy fanatic & a Toffee I would love to see him in the Royal Blue #9 for YEARS & YEARS!!!

Some kind words for you all. Not sure how it was missed. I wanted to start a new thread with this in fear of it getting buried here but decided we had enough LD threads.b)
