Sir Landon Of Donovan

It'll be interesting to see what he's like against lesser sides who sit back and cut off his space. I think that will be us more of an idea of what he's about, how productive he is as a wide player in different areas.

Up to now he's shown some promising things but there's a long way to go. He could be potentially involved in around 14-15 more games if everything goes well, lots of time to prove himself to get to a better fitness level.

Interesting point, to take what uve said and twist it a little, will also be interesting watching against the lesser teams, cos if hes shining against Arse and City, granted, only flashes, he should really be able to take other teams apart.

Any team that sits back on him will get punished. MLS sides have learned that you have to close him down quickly and/or deny him the ball or else something bad could happen to you, usually with you picking the ball out of your net.

His fitness will come and the rust will disappear but it might take another week.

I hope that's the case, you've certainly seen alot more of him than me. He's certainly shown some good footwork in tight situations, more so against Arsenal. I'm guessing European games will give him alot more time and space aswell.

Very promising stuff so far though, if he has got a clause of $10 million then I'd be very keen on signing him, that really is nothing, Championship players go for similar prices.

Houston's last home match back in October was against LA. Becks played the whole match but Donovan came in only for the 2nd half and up front.

Our back four played as tight to him as we could so even if he was able to hold on to a received ball at his feet, that he couldn't turn and do any damage.

We kept him from scoring or assisting but that was a one off.

What I think is great is that he's got quality from top to bottom surrounding him with Everton. He WILL raise his game to make sure that he doesn't let Everton down and to make sure that the game doesn't pass him by.

I really couldn't think of a better place for him to get acclimated to England than with Everton. It suits him.

That's hilarious as that crossed my mind.

It won't matter though. He'll get forward and do some damage at some point during the match.

Hahaha, well their scouts must be pretty dire if they read forums to scout teams.

You can just imagine the teamtalk from McCleish.

"Well our scouts have been and read GOT, Tx Bill said we gotta keep tight against Donovan, so Bowyer, I want you on him at all times, meanwhile, some lerd called MikelsGoat said Hibbert is a bit gash" :D

Wow - was on the phone to someone in rural New Hampshire (well OK, it's all rural) for work, and for some reason he mentioned "football", and when I cheekily asked him "what type of football" he said, and I quote, "the type Landon Donovan is playing for the Bitish Everton team" - this without any clue that I follow the sport, let alone the Blues.

I lived in NH a few years ago and they are pretty up on football. Very much so since Charlie Davies (US MNT Striker) is from Manchester, NH (not the original).

Makes sense, and with Donovan having played for the Revolution that would help, but it also illustrates how he's raised our profile in the US. More so than in Canada from what I've seen so far.

I completely agree. Donovan has been able to coast from time to time with the Galaxy and I think he probably gets a bit bored. He has never been surrounded by the kind of talent (even with the US nats. team) that he has with Everton. He can't mail it in with these guys and his comments reflect that. This will push him to perform at a higher level. This and the fact that he is obviously enjoying himself and bit suprised at how much he likes it. Kudos to Moyes, the lads and the fans for creating that atmosphere. Emotionally, I think you already have him and more importantly, his head is in the right place. My prediction is that he will want to extend his loan for the rest of the EPL season. The precedent with the Galaxy has already been set by Becks and I think Donovan now understands why Becks wanted to stay with AC Milan till the end of serie A. Donovan will probably use the same argument. Playing in the Prem league up to the World Cup will give him the best chance to be in top form. He will come back to the Galaxy with Becks after the World Cup on a farewell tour and lead the Galaxy back to the championship. The money and the rest is up to you Everton boys. Good luck and enjoy one of our California native sons.

I guess it depends on which area, Manchester is basically a suburb of Boston so it wouldn't be surprising that they would be up on football. The further north you get, it's basically Quebec without the public healthcare.

Still, I agree, it's really about Donovan and the exposure he gets here. He and Altidore have really been the leading American players in terms of the pop culture that surrounds US sports in the past 2-3 years.

Actually have to say I disagree with this. IMO, based on everything that's gone before, he will only leave the Galaxy for an outright purchase, and if the MLS season goes forward (player strike resolved) then there is no way the Galaxy allows Donovan to play at Everton on loan through the first half of the MLS season. This is all straight from the horse's mouth (Galaxy coach and general manager Bruce Arena).

If you remember, Arena said more or less the same thing about Becks during our preseason last year and then Becks extended his loan. The situations are slightly different but with many similarities. Becks also used his own money to extend the loan. The precedent has been set! It would make Donovan wander why he can't get similar allowances. Also, do not underestimate the relative happiness of a player. Pissing off Donovan and forcing him back for the beginning of a season which is essentially meaningless as long as you make the playoffs (see Real Salt Lake) will go a long way to driving Donovan out of the Galaxy. Arena, as a former US nats team coach, will understand the argument that Donovan will be better prepared for the World Cup with Everton even if his primary responsibility is the Galaxy. Also, Bob Bradley, current US nats team coach, would probably support Donovan's argument. Lastly, there is not much, outside of the contract, for Donovan to return. He recently split with his wife. He has already won multiple championships and MVP awards. He has been continually told that he is not good enough for the EPL, europe, etc. He will make considerably more money in the EPL and he really seems to like Everton. All of this means, that Donovan is gone from the Galaxy. Likely, sooner than later.
