Sir Landon Of Donovan

I'll also add to the bonfire thought...

Aint he a bit moody sometimes? I mean, our fans can be pretty harsh if you're playing [Poor language removed]. Its all peaches and cream so far but what about if the cream turns sour? Will he, and we, be the kinda [Poor language removed] to drink it?

(Sorry about the last bit lol)

He's looked alright so far, in those comments he's clearly knew what he was doing and indicated if it continues then he'd like to stay.

Still loads of water to go under the bridge before then, if he keeps on then I'd like him to stay.

One thing that wouldn't be good would be a stand off with the US. I'm picturing Navy SEALs storming the changies and kidnapping Donovan.

Lost where I was going with that there to be honest.

Sahard would spark em all out though. (y)

Makes sense, and with Donovan having played for the Revolution that would help, but it also illustrates how he's raised our profile in the US. More so than in Canada from what I've seen so far.

Landon Donovan never played for the Revolution. San Jose and LA. And Howard only played in New York.

US soccer fans will follow any European club that signs an American player. Especially an EPL club seeing how the league gets more play on American tv than any other european league.

But Everton don't have just any Americans. You have arguably the two best American players in Howard and Donovan. It's not like West Ham with Jonathan Spector who is with the national team and possibly a starter, but not a star. You've done the USA equivalent of signing Lampard and Rooney. Attention will follow in the USA if Donovan sticks around.

Fair question. He's had bad international runs in the past and he does have issues keeping his mouth shut when it should be (see Beckham). Let's hope it never comes to bear and during his stint (regardless of his contribution), Everton make a nice little run and the pull of playing at Goodison when the old lady is roaring will be too much.

maybe not with tim being a keeper but since i can remember, i don't recall an american letting us down

If you remember, Arena said more or less the same thing about Becks during our preseason last year and then Becks extended his loan. The situations are slightly different but with many similarities. Becks also used his own money to extend the loan. The precedent has been set! It would make Donovan wander why he can't get similar allowances. Also, do not underestimate the relative happiness of a player. Pissing off Donovan and forcing him back for the beginning of a season which is essentially meaningless as long as you make the playoffs (see Real Salt Lake) will go a long way to driving Donovan out of the Galaxy. Arena, as a former US nats team coach, will understand the argument that Donovan will be better prepared for the World Cup with Everton even if his primary responsibility is the Galaxy. Also, Bob Bradley, current US nats team coach, would probably support Donovan's argument. Lastly, there is not much, outside of the contract, for Donovan to return. He recently split with his wife. He has already won multiple championships and MVP awards. He has been continually told that he is not good enough for the EPL, europe, etc. He will make considerably more money in the EPL and he really seems to like Everton. All of this means, that Donovan is gone from the Galaxy. Likely, sooner than later.

I think it would be great for Donovan and for the U.S. team if he stayed through the close of the season. Unfortunately, along with Arena, Donovan himself has said, even at the outset of this loan, that he would not extend it into the MLS season (as this was what he found so objectionable about Beckham's loan). So, barring a sale of the player, it would be incredibly hypocritical of him to go back on his word in such a blatant manner.

In regards to Bruce Arena doing what's best for the U.S. national team... Arena will do what serves his own interests, and that definitely does not include allowing his franchise player to abandon his place in LA to serve some so-called higher ideal.

LA would have to let Donovan go at the buy-out price in his contract. This in turn would allow them to save face by saying it was the player who forced a sale through the clause that he had insisted be included in it. A repeat of the Beckham fiasco could spell catastrophe for LA's ticket sales. They won't agree to anything that they can't spin in their favor to the fans, and an extended loan does not fall into that category. It's possible that a loan with purchase agreement in place could qualify, but that essentially equals a sale anyway.

So far I think he has just told the reporters what they want to hear. Him saying that he can't control the future to me sounds like he is already in contract and can't do anything to change that.

As a Galaxy supporter that sounds great to me. However, I would like to see Donovan stay and see how much he can demolish teams in Europe and England. It would shut the nay sayers up for good.

I don't buy the idea of him staying to better himself for the World Cup. He has been amazing on the international scene for years while being in the MLS. No offense but how well does preparation in the PL work for English players?

As far as Landon signing with Everton I wish it could happen. In MLS he's done well against some good football players but it's nothing like playing in EPL where you constantly go against the best players in the world. If he stayed on in England it would make him a better all around player for our national side, no doubt. But I'm elated that he has this chance on loan. There are youth soccer players over here watching him in England and thinking, "I CAN grow up and play in the EPL one day" because Landon Donovan did.

The distinct possibility of a lockout (or strike) delaying the start of the MLS season may change the situation, allowing Donovan to extend his loan spell anyway.

As a Toronto FC season ticket holder I'd have mixed feelings, but if Donovan's performances and attitude continue to impress, I vote for the lockout (y)

A lockout isn't going to happen. The players will get crushed. Some team probably want a lockout given that they are losing money. Plus all the players have rents and mortages to pay for.

Lockout -- nope. Perm deal for Landon? Possible.

I agree, Rook. There won't be a lockout. There's no way the MLS and the players association can afford to have a delay to the season for so many reasons, including those you stated.

As for Landon and a permanent deal. It's possible. But a deal won't be struck until after the World Cup. Landon is ready to move on to Europe. No matter what he said about Beckham, if he has suitors after the WC, he's as good as gone. It's just a matter of how well he does in SA and if he wants to come back to Everton, which I am definitely hoping for.
