Sir Landon Of Donovan

He hasnt played for 6-7 weeks, plus the stress and strain of a move, he needs to get his match fitness back, plus, I would imagine a Prem game is a lot more taxing than a MLS game, no offence.

I do suspect it's fatigue his game tapered off in the two games. He's had to work hard in both of them helping out Neville with Arshavin and Bellamy, so I think that probably takes its toll too. (y)

Could hear the fans chanting "USA, USA" on the TV when Donovan went over in the first half to take a corner. Then Moyes pulls him off in the 90th minute so he can experience what its like to hear Goodison Park alive and showing its appreciation for his effort.

This is the kind of stuff that might get him to stay. He's never going to see anything like that back in LA. Hell, he could probably go to the grocery unnoticed in LA. He's been in Liverpool for two weeks and is already notorious.
Hey now... Donovan gets much love here in LA. And we aren't using the same words(USA! USA!) that are used for Howard... Dempsey... Friedel... Hannamen(lol at my spelling)... Altidore. :P

All in good fun. Actually I think the British chanting USA is extremely over the top hilarious.

Spot on that TxB. Almost a carbon copy of the Arsenal game where he had a real impact first half and faded slightly in the second. I dont know what that's down to - maybe fatigue rather than defenders figuring him out. He's done his best work so far chasing down balls pumped long and wide. He gets the ball under control and gets himself facing in the right direction really quickly and defenders hate it. Doesn't look the same player coming from slightly deeper carrying the ball though.

I think it's down to the pace of the game more than anything, there is a massive difference between the MLS and the Premier League, it's just on a different level (in terms of tempo) to most Leagues in all honesty, which is why it's so unique. It's fast and furious and it can take a bit of time to adapt to.

He'll get there, he just needs to adapt and improve his fitness, which won't be up to scratch considering he hasn't played alot of late.

In terms of his style, I think he's more of a wing forward, suited to playing in a 4-3-3. He's not really someone who's going to come short like Pienaar, when Neville picked up the ball at right back Donovan had a tendency to run towards goal, obviously looking for that ball over the top, something to run onto.

But he did show some neat play at times, especially in the first half. I think he's a tidy footballer, not very elaborate, he's more likely to beat you for pace or with a give and go than trickery or skill. He does help the balance of the side though, big time.

My perspective

I would like to get on my soap box for a second before I address Landy. Firstly, MLS' quality is akin to the Championship. Not League 1. I will also contend that some of our sides would take matches off the bottom of the table in EPL. Would Everton be a giant if they played in MLS. Yes. Could a side like LA Galaxy or Seattle Sounders stave off relegation if they were in the EPL? Yes, if they were allowed to operate under the same rules and werent forced to adhere to the MLS salary cap.

What is truly holding MLS back is an embarrassingly low salary cap ($2.5M) and no free agency. We have found that MLS can attract good quality players (ex. Beckham, Ljungberg, Angel and shortly Henry) but the problem lies that entire rosters cannot be filled out with top shelf players. There are several teams that have the money to contend on the international market, teams like Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, Toronto FC and NY RedBull, but are forbidden to pursue anyone outside the one "designated player" the league allows. International players seem to want to live in cities like LA, New York and Seattle so the league has a built in advantage there. MLS will see its day. Once they feel the league is ready.

That all said, that day isnt today and I feel that Everton has a very strong chance of landing Donovon if they wish. I feel that Donovon will return to the Galaxy after this loan spell, play in South Africa and do great things, and then be sold to Everton after MLS play concludes in November. Especially if Henry lands in New York or Seattle.

He will not go cheap as he is MLS' greatest asset outside of Beckham. I am thinking in the neighborhood of $20M.

Full discloser I am a fan of DC United.

You are fukking messing , right.??

Mate he's probably worth about £5m-£7m and thats on current form....

I'd love us to buy him as he gives are midfield the balance we craved for years.

I wouldn't get too worked up about what U.S. supporters suppose his worth is. Opinions on that will vary widely as there is not really an established precedent for a player of his experience and quality in the U.S. In terms of what is known, up until recently the number floated was in the neighborhood of $10 million. If he plays well over the course of the loan then MLS is likely to overvalue him due to the value of his image to the league. However, and fortunately for Everton, there is a built-in buy-out clause in his new contract, so at the very least the league wouldn't be able to inflate the number beyond that (barring other teams offering significantly more- however I wouldn't worry too much about this given the fact that Donovan will be most concerned with acclimation and playing time, especially with the World Cup around the corner). As has already been stated earlier, the journalist who broke the buy-out clause story has stated that he believes the number to still be around $10 million. The smart money would say it is a lot closer to $10 million than $20 million.

Jozy "frigging" Altidore went for $10M. I don't think MLS would of put themselves in position to let Landon go for anything close to that. Landon is the face of MLS so yes, you are correct, they will inflate the price with hopes he stays in LA. Just my opinion of course.

this.

watching the pace yesterday...on attack and on DEFENSE was mind numbing...VERY up tempo. LD will be fine-but it has got to be an adjustment for him to go at that speed for a full 90.

True, but Altidore was still very young when he moved, "potential" can often drive a price upwards. Donovan is nearly 28.
