Sir Landon Of Donovan

Even if he was out of contract in March, the MLS still hold his registration.

I'm *relatively* sure that the freedom of movement principles under the Bosman ruling only apply to EU clubs and therefore, even if he is out of contract, we would still need to pay a fee. Albeit a smaller one as without a contract, the MLS couldn't play him in one of their sides.

His Contract runs through Next year MLS season. He will be free in December of 2013 Like all players in their last year of contract the MLS/Galaxy will get less and less for him the longer this goes on. He will be cheaper this winter than right now, he will be cheaper summer 2013 than he is now, he will be free December 2013.

Okay, so now I'm confused. Mixed messages going on in this thread. Which one is it:

a) completely free in December 2013
b) free to talk to other clubs but MLS still hold his rights so they can still demand a fee.

The MLS thing isn't an issue. If he wants to go abroad, he can go.

The MLS hold the rights to the player's actions in the US, when his contract is expired with the Galaxy he will be free to go to any other country he chooses.

Thanks for clearing it up.

You would hope he picks L4 if he's true to his word...

Hmmmmm

Sure about that?

You may be right, but it's not possible to sign players from the likes of The Ukraine on free transfers on the expiry of their contract, because they are not in the EU and are not bound by the Bosman ruling.

I'd need to double check about the US. They may have their own legislation which covers this, and he may be able to move on a free after all, but it's most definitely not the case that all players in the world can move for free when their contract expires (unless FIFA have ruled on this recently and I've missed it).

I know it's December as well for end of contract, but Brennan is right about Nike/Gatorade being involved as LCAB has told us, so...who the hell knows. Just wait for December of 2012.

2 goals, 2 hit posts, and should have had an assist but was waived off by the inept linesman tonight.

Since he has come back from Nats duty:
7 goals, 5 assists in 9 games.

Also scored his 200th career goal tonight.

Anyone worried about his age, don't worry.

I think if we had him for a season he could do something similar for us as Dempsey did for Fulham last season.

No disrespect to the MLS but his quality deserves to be staged in one of the top leagues with world wide exposure testing hmself against the best.

My non-Everton supporting mates think Donovan is class and struggle to understand why we haven't signed him permanently. Oh, how they will never know.

He's been involved in 32 goals in 47 appearances overall in the calender year of 2012. Definitely not worried about his age here. He'd be the signing of the window if we got him in on a free.

Stuart Holden was out of contract with Dynamo when he went to Bolton. Anyone recall a fee? I can't but that's more likely a crap memory than knowledge about it
