For me the first thing that came into my head when i heard about the Cahill deal is that its a sweet heart deal between Everton and the MLS for the replacement for Landon - i fully expect Donovan on a permo tbh.

LCAB also retweeted someone who said people are not ITK just because they put 2 + 2 together regarding cahill and donovan, instead it's just common sense. could just be a RT because i know he gets pissed off with everyone claiming to be ITK all of a sudden.

If its for a nominal fee/free I have no doubt he'd be here in a flash. Surely the fee is the issue?

I don't want him.

There, I've said it. He's boss, I love the lid and he makes us play better, but he'd be on big wages and would definitely cost a few million. We'd be better going for someone with more years and/or a potential sell on fee in the tank, knowing that Pienaar is also on his way.

Head over heart, of course, but that's the only way for me.

i think cahill leaving has hardened your heart mate! but kinda know what you mean, i'd still love him here meself

I think he'd be great for us for about three seasons. Sometimes it isn't viable to shoot for the 20 year olds, if we signed Donovan and he got us into the Europa League, and gets us there consistently, then we can aim for the 20 year olds.

Its speculative but you have to be to progress.

But we wouldn't progress financially. The Europa league can end up costing you more if you have to expand your squad, as the rewards are tiny. Especially for teams like us who get knocked out as soon as we play anyone remotely decent.

I don't agree with the "we shouldn't buy people because they have no sell on value" view on it. If he's good enough, which we know he is, sign him up.

You can not agree which is fine, but you can't deny that a club in our position has to consider sell on fees. It's how we survive.

It's not always about quality. Drenthe had quality, Demba Ba had quality but rightly or wrongly there are many other factors.

It would daft not to agree that we do need to sell to balance our books, but should we use it as a reason not to sign Donovan? Someone we know will make an impact and isn't off his head like Drenthe.

I would usually be of that mindset, but i think you have to take a potential fee into account - if hes out of contract in Dec surely he would just be a couple of million. Well worth 3-4 years. As well as that i think he can play a number of positions if requried so all in cost benifit i think it would a pretty good deal. Id prob be against if it was anything north of six mill.
