Sir Landon Of Donovan

And that is the lone position that he SUCKS at. Way way way too small and HATES to have his back to goal.

Please god no.

Could it potentially mean a 4-4-2 though?????????

Saha
LD
Drenthe - Fellaini - Osman - Coleman
Baines - Jags - Distin - Hibbert

EDIT: The speed on that formation is disgustingly good and would look MILES different than anything we've done recently.

He's gonna have to get used to it...

Plus, if it sounds and is good - chances are we will never use that.

God I hope we see that (the 4-4-2).

And he will 100% fail if we play him at lone striker unless we play a false 9. Which we don't.

Trust any USMNT fan - we all know this.

I know mate, I know it too, as it's pretty obvious (plus followed him while here and during the WC and a few games... not just cut out for that).

Trust ya mate, was only pulling your leg. And that is the sex if it happens, the 4-4-2 I mean!

Having Donovan in the team changes the way the opposition approach the game. He’s got pace to run behind defenders so pressing up the pitch becomes more risky. He’s also a finisher. If the attack is coming from the left he becomes an additional striker. You can also change your tactics during the game without making substitutions. That’s very difficult for the opposition to deal with.

Were a bit too easy to plan for at the moment because we’re too structured, he’s a hard worker so the structure doesn’t suffer too much when we lose the ball.

I meant 'anonymous' as a wide player, so that link pretty much underlines the point I was making. I thought he and Beckham were almost playing interchangeable roles that first half. It was hard to know who was playing the more central role at times. He's a different, though not necessarily better, option to Coleman out wide. He's still got pace that can hurt, but it's over short distances and he did his best work moving past the last line of defence on the end of a penetrating pass. He's two years down the road since we last saw him and I'm not sure he's got the legs to give us what we need in that RM role.

If he came over again I'm sure he'd do a job somewhere, so on that basis it's a no brainer. But I'd prefer we started putting what little money we have to bringing in someone on a permanent basis. These short term loans look a bit desperate...which I suppose is what we are as a club.

Forgot about that benefit as well. That's also an upgrade versus Seamus.

Not sure how Moyes is going to juggle those two. Or how Drenthe fits in.

Life suddenly gets interesting for Drenthe/Coleman/Hibbert, and frankly even Saha who might finally get a freaking strike partner.

Remember, in 2010 Saha benefitted greatly from Donovan's runs and crosses.

This is NOT to bag on Seamus. I think this is a GOOD thing for him. LD's not going to be purchased. Seamus needs to absorb as much as he can get from that 2 months (if it is two months) with LD, or start playing at RB.

True, all of this.

Except that I can only think of how Drenthe will benefit from the eventual arrival of Donovan, instead of losing his spot or anything...
Then again, we are Everton.

Ah...I get it. Yes, totally agree with your "playing central" statement then. My apologies for misinterpreting the first time. Yes, we all noticed - in fact, a lot of US national team fans noticed as we've been wondering if we want to play him centrally or out wide as well (long story, but we noticed).

There is a discussion going on as to where to play him for the Nats which will echo the discussion here.

We do disagree on upgrade to Seamus. Landon has been playing through injuries the last two months - and he FINALLY looked back to being fit during the Cup. He ran a full 80 yard sprint a couple of weeks ago to clear a ball at the goal mouth from deep in his half. He might have lost a step, but he is still one of the fastest players on the pitch. Don't know if he's faster than Seamus now, but his finishing, crossing and decision-making I think are better.

Question is, do you play a 4-4-2 or not?

EDIT: And I hear you on loan vs. purchase. I'm not rational on this one. :) But I hear you. It's kinda the state we're in.

From a footballing perspective this is exciting, the great thing about Donovan is he is effective, in terms of goals and assists, he is also an outlet and will provide pace and assist us in getting in behind teams. He offers the option of width but at the same time do can play as a wing forward. The exciting thing is he will more then likely be in the same team as Roy of the Lowlands - who can equally be as effective in terms of goals and assists as well as both together offering balance as wel as pace. Tactically both can play wide as well as inside forwards, so with both we have wingers but also, wing forwards capable of goals and assists.

Of the feild im not really a fan of the three month loan deal, financially it doesnt make much sense from a cost benifit point of view and the reported 3 mill loan fee for 12 odd weeks, before wages. To put that in perspective Chris Eagles cost less on a permo for Bolton and done well in terms of goals and assists.
