Sharp

I have mixed feelings. He said some things I vehemently disagreed with, but we are talking about a bona fide club legend here.

It was a joke that he was ever appointed to the board because to be a director you should be bringing some expertise and I never understood exactly what he was supposed to be contributing. It did feel like he was being used as a human shield by Kenwright and Moshiri.

But all that being accepted, he's done enough for the club that I feel like we should be able to try and forgive and move on.

He was part of a group that smeared the fanbase in the national press, he sat silently and allowed it to happen. His legacy is scrubbed as far as I’m concerned, he should be blacklisted from the club.

I can't defend anything that happened in that period and I wouldn't. They effectively declared war on the fanbase and Sharp being in that group at the time makes him culpable, but again I think he was used as a human shield by them and was manipulated by Kenwright (he wouldn't be the first person he pulled this trick on).

I won't try and convince anyone here, but it feels wrong to me that we ostracise a club legend like that without allowing him to try to at least explain or make it right.

….i was wondering as he seems to be about plenty on match days. As much as I rated the player, he shouldn’t be ‘working for the club’ in any capacity now as far as I’m concerned.
Yeah, as much as I'm preaching forgiveness here, I don't see why he needs to be working for the club.

I'd simply like to see him able to attend games if he wanted to.

Correct.

Acknowledged as a great player for us, but that is as far as it should go.

Employed by the club and having more contact with fans he completely let down is beyond the pale, I'm afraid.

How the club and the Echo think they can make this all sound like just an everyday 'player comes back to club' story is farcical.

Too much has happened for him to ever be back working at this club. Way too much.

Keep it civil please folks. You, and by extension the community here just look like nobs/lose credibility if make it personal.

My own opinion shared years back;

In my view, there was a concerted effort by the clubs custodians at the time to undermine, and tarnish the integrity and reputation of Everton fans.

When he was appointed to the board, I suggested on here it felt like he was being used as a human shield. Fans were on the case of the board - "sack the board" etc - so put a club legend on it.

Now, to be fair to him - even before he was on the board, I recall him laughing at protests years back as "haha one man and his dog"

But, lets remember what he said last time. January 2021. Did this article/release just happen or was it part of a PR effort?

The club decided it wasn't safe for them - the police had no involvement in that decision.
The club decided they'd release a statement in the hours before a critical game and protest to say it wasnt safe for them to attend.
The club directors dont need to attend a fixture - so why release that statement?

Self preservation and they threw fans under the bus. Now, where the below fell in all that is up for debate.

“It was a sad day for the club,” Sharp admitted

"It’s still uncertain whether we will get the go-ahead to attend the next home game against Arsenal on February 4. No one could ever have envisaged things getting to this state where you are actually in physical danger.

“I don’t want to miss games, Everton is in my blood. Of course, fans can have their say and I can understand the frustrations, but some of the protests have gone over the top.

“For instance, no one works harder than Denise. In addition to the day-to-day running of the club, she is also working tirelessly on the new stadium. For her to be targeted is so unfair.”

“The club is in turmoil,” Sharp added. “It needs unity with everyone working hard for the cause, supporters included. Surely no one wants to see scenes again where players have their cars kicked.

“It’s really disappointing when I’m advised not to attend a home game because of safety issues. We will now have to see what transpires in the next week or so before Arsenal arrive at Goodison.”

Ever since he did that interview with the Scotsman newspaper he's been trying to position himself as someone who's been unfairly tarnished and that he was reluctant to go back to the club. A complete spinning of the situation to eventually get his place back on the payroll and never apologise for what he did say and what he failed to say.

Looks like he's got the ear of people who make decisions down there at this new-look club. A terrible decision that reflects very badly on whoever made it.

I said a good while ago a simple open letter to the fans acknowledging he was wrong with an apology would go some way to redeem himself to the fans he insulted & smeared.
Alas he has stayed quiet , which in itself condems himself further.

Now this
What a diabolical decision taken by the club to not only take him back into the fold but to employ him on the staff payroll absolutely stinks.
Whoever contacted Sharp then offered him this position needs taking to task over this.

This club does some fantastic things off the field , admired and applauded by the community & football world.
But also has a side ( like this ) I absolutely detest.

Huge slap in the face for the fanbase.

I wouldn't go as far to say that his legacy is tarnished, as at the end of the day, when you watch back clips of Everton being magic, Sharp scoring goals will be a considerable % of it. He would not have been the architect of the smear campaign on the fans, but he went along with it, it really sours my personal opinion of him but unquestionably he is one of the club's Greatest ever. And in reality he got in over his head with club politics, it's not like he has abused people or is funding the IDF or something.

He sadly has just settled into the yes man / company man role. He really should just be there to host functions and do meet and greets.

I have sympathy for players of his generation taking an easy money gig off the club, the money in their day is chumps change, even compared to the 90s, never mind now.

But the lingering question for me here is why has this been done? To what end? Who at the club was pushing for this? Because I can't help but think that the average fan isn't bothered either way and more people are likely to be annoyed rather than being happy for an old boy getting some easy dough.

"Sharp reveals it was requests from his loved ones that convinced him to return and asked if it was a difficult time for him, he said: 'It was. It was only because of my family that I probably went back.'"

As if it was his decision to go back anytime he wanted. He didnlt go because he COULDN'T go. The spin is sensational.

I utterly despise that man.

Stuck with Moyes and now Sharp back on the club teat.

All hail the club reboot and brave new world.
A decision like this kinda wouldnt bother me but with an accumulation of CEO's comments, Moyes being retained and now this, its leading to believe there is no new era, no new beginnings at all.

It the same old same old Everton that has failed its fanbase for decades.

We are still literally everything we hated about the club 2 years ago, with a better view of the turgid football we put up with.

Only Everton could go into a 'new era' and still be in the same 'era' as before.
