Set pieces..

Apparently (according to SNN) Everton and Liverpool have each conceded 7 set piece goals, which is exceeded by Leicester on 9 and three other teams on between 10 and 13.

Crisis, what crisis?
Cheers for that davek I have been all over google looking for "goals conceded from set pieces" or corners and I couldn't find the numbers without paying for a bloody Opta account. I do take those SSN numbers with a pinch of salt though, who knows if they have included penalties in that count.

Everton are the worst team in the Premier League at winning aerial duels in their own third of the field, winning only 48.2 percent, and second worse in their own penalty area at 45 percent. Teams have completed 77 crosses against them, the fifth most in the league, at 23.8 percent, also the fifth highest. Those crosses have resulted in 49 shots, that's the most shots conceded from crosses in the league, and those shots have ended up in the back of the net 8 times, the second most of any time.

The problem has been particularly acute on set plays. Half of the goals from crosses they've conceded have been from set plays, either corners or free kicks. Opponents are completing their pass 40.5 percent of the time in those situations, the worst performance by a defense in the league. The result is that again, the shooting numbers don't make Howard look bad, because since Everton are poor at defending the original pass, Howard has faced 40 shots assisted by a pass from these dead ball situations, the worst in the league.

No idea mate. Seven is seven too many, but hardly the deluge the 'experts' have been claiming we've been conceding.

It might have been worth them hanging back to find out the extent of the problem before declaring it's wrecking our season. Just a thought.

I wouldn't say it is wrecking our season, that's a (over)reactionary response from some when our form takes a downwards turn. While it isn't as statistically significant as some of the "experts" (as you put it) see it, there isn't much doubting that defending set pieces has hurt us in the last three games.

You see us get scored on from corners three times in three months and you would shrug it off as being statistically insignificant, but if it happens in three games in a row then it is natural for people to see a pattern emerging.

Certainly poor defending from corners has cost us 6 points from Liverpool, Norwich and Palace, and I'm sure there are others too. Also as per the initial post, it's offensively we are terrible too. The lowest scorers from set pieces in the entire league.

Difficult to argue that the combination isn't costing us significant points and places.

You barely even see players going up to challenge for the corners. Cant recall which one resulted in a goal it was (Dann maybe?) but not one player even left their feet to go up for that corner. I mean...if you challenge for a corner thats a completely free shot at goal. Its not terrifyingly worringly, but its something that has been mentioned for years now, we just arent good at either defending or attacking these.

I think over the course of a season it'll even out more...especially with Baines and Jagielka back. The GK situation is the key though: a more dominant keeper than TH brings us into line with other clubs I'd suggest.

There is a certain truth to this. I don't care if we don't score from corners but we have to stop conceding.

I think we have to accept that set pieces are not what we do well. The pressure placed on our team by opposition set pieces is too much for our players to bear. I genuinely believe that we need to rotate our squad more to relieve members of the weekly pressure they face. It is not reasonable to expect them to deal with pressure week in and week out.

Brown shoes always had a number options to address this before the season started and now it,s become an issue which he will be tested on each week by fans and the media. To come out now in the press when the damage is done and use sound-bites halfway through a season is not going to change a thing, the problem was always under his nose.

The cheapest fix is to address it properly every week at FF (get a new defensive coach) and carry that into the games but a new GK in the summer is a must along with identifying a few players who are brave enough to stick there head in where it hurts !

'stick your head in where it hurts'. Here lies some of our problems from set pieces. Along with a keeper that is happy to take even his own players out to get the ball cleared.
