If you said to me “no let’s fly big balloons taking the piss out of Iran’s leader, Saudi’s leader, China’s leader” when they visited here I’d think okay no problems then take the mick out of Trump. But if you were a prominent member politically and were condoning these I’d think you are a first class idiot.

Were there similar protests for the leaders of those nations that Kahn denied? If he's saying "as long as it doesn't harm safety, people can protest freely to any state visit..." but people chose not to do so for the visit of Iran's leader, then how is that Kahn's fault?

Given his apparent liking for 'hard men', perhaps Kahn is allowing this protest so he can beat people over the head, lock them up without trial and split their family up.

The best relationships are ones in which you feel confident and able to tell the other that they're wrong. They're not ones in which you sycophantically do whatever they wish so you might get some crumbs from the table. The protest may well be silly and juvenile, but going for some kind of communist era hero worship would be rather demeaning, don't you think?

And by the way, as Khan is dismissing crime in London and seems more intent on diverting efforts of police to enable people not having their feelings hurt, you may need to get your alter ego namesake out and get to work.

Maybe Kahn should have noted how sensible people respect the visit of another countries leader and done likewise.

Just digressing. Someone in Sheffield (was it the Mayor?) has banned Trump from visiting the city. I had to laugh as I don't think Trump has any plans to visit or even knows where it is. Still, the guy got his picture in the paper.

It's not a question of him protesting personally, it's whether he should deny people the right to protest or not.

Parties are veering towards the margins across the board it seems to me. Blair and Cameron were both pretty central as far as their parties went, but what has followed both has been a move to the margins. Not a good thing imo.
