Running

Anyone got a Garmin Forerunner 165? About to order one as I have given up on my FitBit now after constant GPS issues but wondering if they're really worth the £200.

I have the forerunner 145 music, what extra does the 165 give you? I'm happy with mine and that's the cheaper version. I pretty much press on at the start of a run and off at the end tho, it depends how complicated you want it to be

Yeh I don't need a music version, unsure on difference between 145/165 either it's just the model my two runner mates use. I am very bobby basic but want it to be accurate, easy connected to Strava, large enough screen to track a few things at once mid run etc.

My fitbit can show me like time lapsed and nothing else and as soon as I run through trees GPS goes and half my run is lost. Shabite thing.

i mainly run trail and i've never had GPS issues with my Garmain (and i use it for Strava). i'd assume you get some extras with the 165 but i don't know what

Heres what AI told me (The Garmin 145 doesn't exist)

The
Garmin Forerunner 165
(released 2024) is a significant modern upgrade over the older
Garmin Forerunner 45
(released 2019). While the
Forerunner 45
remains a functional entry-level running watch, the
165
introduces a vibrant AMOLED touchscreen and a broader suite of health and training metrics previously reserved for high-end models.

Key Feature Comparison
  • Display Quality: The
    Garmin Forerunner 165
features a bright 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a
    1776696382096.gif
    1776696382104.gif
    resolution. In contrast, the
    Garmin Forerunner 45
    uses an older, non-touch 1.04-inch Memory-in-Pixel (MIP) display (
    1776696382112.gif
    1776696382120.gif
resolution) that is functional in sunlight but lacks the vibrancy and clarity of AMOLED.
  • Battery Life: In smartwatch mode, the
    Garmin Forerunner 165
lasts up to 11 days, compared to approximately 7 days for the
    Garmin Forerunner 45
. GPS battery life is also improved on the
    165
at 19 hours versus 13 hours on the
    45
    .
  • Advanced Sensors: The
    Garmin Forerunner 165
includes several sensors absent from the
    45
, such as a barometric altimeter for tracking elevation and floors climbed, a pulse ox sensor for blood oxygen monitoring, and a compass for improved navigation features like "TrackBack".
  • Training & Wellness:
    • Running Dynamics: The
      165
provides wrist-based metrics like running power, stride length, and ground contact time without extra accessories.

So you get touchscreen and some more analytics

Bloody love touchscreens.

Just see me in Maccies at times using theirs and not even ordering anything.

Been wearing a 235 daily for 5+ years, love it for what it does. Not familiar with the 165, and I don't use it for the bells and whistles, but if you want basic data it should be really good.

No such thing as bad weather mate, just bad gear ;)

Used to know a guy, he told me one time he and his father in law were driving through town in pouring rain and joked as he saw a pair of runners, "need to tell [serenitynigh] about those guys, look how crazy they are!" then as they got closer realized it was me. It was a wet day, even by our standards (but not cold), and to be honest once we started running we never noticed it (if there's no friction, that's what I always noticed). Your body heats up pretty well unless there's biting wind or excessive cold. The shoes, they were soaked completely, nothing to do about that.

As long as you keep moving you stay warm, it`s that the problems and cold sets in the moment you stop, especially in the Winter ( as you know ).

I`ve done a couple of mountain races in extreme weather, where I`ve been eternally grateful for the pre race, full and compulsory kit check !

Had the pleasure of watching the Newport Marathon yesterday, don't miss that distance tbh.
Good few wearing Everton tops. Sat on a bus afterwards (missus ran the marathon) back to the park n ride, got chatting to fella next to me, was also a blue, family lives in Southport.
Felt ace surrounded by so many especially for a southener like me, and 3.5 hours away from where I live

Wild results in recent marathons but especially those London results.

The commercialisation of it is really doing my head in.

I would never take anything away from anyone who runs a marathon or anyone who runs and raises money for charity, but a lot of the big marathons now seem to be all about " look at me "/ " look at my kit " / look at my nutrition plans " / " look at my training plans " and " look at me afterwards "

Then take loads of selfies everywhere, just to prove how great you are.

They want to try standing in a muddy field, getting ready to run up a mountain in the middle of nowhere, with a hundred other runners, whilst the rain is smashing you in the face and the check in is a fold down table, manned by a grisly old fell runner, who`s legs won`t work anymore

I've seen a rise in "look at me, I'm supporting someone doing the marathon" social media posts which are somehow worse. It's not about you ffs - all you've done is got dressed and walked to a race.
