Ross Barkley

I think he tries too hard but also has a lot of self doubt.

4 touches when 1 and a pass will do.
A pass instead of a shot.
A dribble instead of a pass.

I remember reading an article where he played a youth or a school match, I forget which, completely with his left foot just to see if he could do it. That's how he should be playing, for enjoyment. If he's enjoying what he's doing then he'll do no wrong because he's that good.

He is so good at turning in midfield and driving forward with the ball but then his brain must go into overload and he doesn't know what option to take when he should just take the first one he sees, the first thing he sees will be before anyone else so it's the best option.
Agreed, he is more of an instinctive player than most. He is at his best when he spends less time dwelling on the ball, trying to over-think it, and more time just following his feet. In all walks of life you either have the technical, cerebral, consistent types, or you have the temperamental, artistic types. Occasionally, and very rarely, you have the perfect mix of the two. For a number of seasons now, it feels like everyone (including himself) has been trying to force him into this rare latter category, but he just is not really that type of player. He is too talented for his own good and does not appear to have the self discipline to steer and focus that talent. He drifts in and out of games, as though waiting for those fleeting moments of genius to course through his veins, and that is enough. I imagine, just guessing mind, that it is very difficult to coach this kind of player - You can lead a horse to water, but....
Square peg, round hole? More like irregular, random shape, round hole. He cannot be categorised and that is what drives his coaches insane.

It's got nothing to do with mindset. I've been saying for years he's not a no 10 and against teams that we need to break down it couldn't be more obvious. Move him back and get him to defend. If he can't defend then he won't make it with us. Simple.

Ronnys Everton doesnt carry passengers.

Climb on the train or wait at the station.
Here's what Koeman's position is on Barkley: he sees him as a player that he can build a team around, but only if he becomes consistent. It makes no sense to do that if his form is sporadic. I get that.

But Ross is Ross and he needs the velvet glove more than the iron fist. It's all down to how you coax out the consistency. I'm afraid Koeman is just going to crush a butterfly of a talent on a wheel if he hooks him and undermines his confidence.

Koeman is maybe not the best manager to get the best out of Barkley. That's my biggest fear. And that would be a minor disaster for us.

He can shovel coal to make the train move or he can sit back at the station crying about how unfair it all is.

He got a short, sharp, shock, he sat on the bench and watched as Geri did everything he should have been doing, he sat on the bench and watched "kick and run merchants" set up the goals for our goalscorer, he sat on the bench and watched as "the belgian fanny" slipped the through balls he should be making.

Then he was summoned to the gaffers office were no doubt he was told whats expected of a player of his talent in the new dawn.

How he reacts in training this week will determine whether he gets a chance to right his wrongs on Saturday, hopefully he does, but its on Ross to perform.

My biggest fear is that Ross doesnt become the player he can be, Moyes ignored him, Martinez told him he was the scouse Messi, neither approach was ideal, hes had the carrot, now its time for the stick.

Be all you can be Ross, believe in yourself, you are the best player on every pitch you step on, believe that and show it.

Whoa, sorry to derail your train there Casey Jones, but ANY of the attacking unit could have been hooked there on Monday night. If it'd have been Mirallas and not him, he'd have been in on the three goal win.

Barkley doesn't need to prove himself to anyone. The quality is there. His figures from last season shows he worked fine and dandy. If Koeman cant coax that out of him this season i guess the chubby faced Friesian isn't the manager you think he is.

You know what Koeman cares about? Getting results, hes not here to breast feed players.

Im not a Ross hater, surely the last line of my post above should highlight that.

And I agree, any of the front 4 could have been hooked on Monday, but Ronny picked out Ross, lets judge in a few months whether it was a good decision, but short term, it won us the game.

My suspicion is that Koeman would rather have a battler like Steven Davis than a class act like Barkley.

I reckon that Ross in any Everton side put together by Koeman will be like giving donkeys strawberries. He needs class around him to perform. If Koeman is looking for a Drinkwater type who gets the ball deep and pings it 30 yards to a whippet like Boalise then we may as well call it quits. Our boy Ross don't do hoof, he carries the ball at his feet like a CL thoroughbred.

Koemans teams dont normally play an advanced playmaker like Ross, so maybe he is playing at a disadvantage, surely that means its on Ross to perform, to earn his place, like every player in the squad should.

This isnt the clapped out 10 carriage we had under El Fraudo, this is the high speed rail link to France.

Choo choo David, buy a ticket or wait at Lime Street for us to return.

Being slightly facetious, I'd say that arguably your proposed velvet glove treatment with Martinez hasn't really worked well in the past with Ross.

Ross clearly needs to be nurtured if he is to truly and consistently apply the obvious talent he has, but sometimes a little bit of tough love works.

Ignoring your tendencies to incite, I still doubt Koeman will want to simply bludgeon Ross into some physical brute of an automaton.

This is a manager who was one of the best ball playing defenders of his time and played at a club, with other stars, who epitomised flash football.

So it will not be instantly hammered out of the lad! Although, I think he'll explain to Ross that he needs to quickly improve elements of his game.

We know he has the potential and physical talent to be a star and his stats show this, but the eye doesn't hide the many deficiencies in his game.

He needs to be more consistent; he needs to up his tenacity and application and he needs to have to really harness his decision making.

Rubbing his back and coaching him with a nurturing arm will undoubtedly play a part, yet a sharp "come on lad" may be the catalyst needed.

Personally, it's really frustrating as I know how good he can be although I can't ignore the fact he just doesn't do it enough to be the best.

When did he do that last

Barkley adapts to a deeper role. That's in his locker. What your expecting him to do is become a hod carrier who gets involved in little triangles and runs his bollocks off to help out TWO defensive midfielders because Koeman is a belt and braces man.

The thing is - and this goes for his time under RM - Barkley is NOT suited to the position he plays. He's not got the feet or quick thinking to see a short telling pass in the final third...never has and I dear say never will.

He's a player that will only progress when he's dropped back to CM and he's allowed time to get on the ball and carry it. Trouble is theses days at non-elite clubs all managers seem to just want to pack that unit with two foragers. That's never going to be RB.

He could do the job I describe at a CL playing team because they have the quality to make do with one forager. RB could be a Yaya Toure or Frank Lampard.
