Ross Barkley

I've never seen a footballer so affected by criticism than Barkley. His confidence just disappears.

....I'm not so sure this is the reason but if it is his character is lacking. Regardless, there are too many excuses. As RK said, it's up to him to produce quality displays week in week out, it's what the best players do. We know he can positively impact games, we want him to be a success but it's up to him to deliver.

Luv Ross but was poor last night so was .
The media's gleeful pouncing on Barkley is exactly the reason England win nothing on an international level. If this lad played for any of the monied 6 there wouldn't be a word against him. Dele Alli had one of the worst Euros of anyone in the England team yet nothing was said. The media complain when Jack Wilshere or Henderson fresh off their injury beds aren't selected in the first team. For Ross Barkley though they couldn't wait for him to hit a slump in form and they were on him like vultures. Absolutely shameful. The lad is class and has more talent than any English midfielder except perhaps Wilshere. No way in my mind Koeman or Everton will even consider casting him aside.
Totally agree and your point was proven on Saturday John stones made 3 or 4 mistakes and not a bad word said about him if he did that at Everton he'd be ripped to pieces

Against Boro at home I would rest Barry.

Barry can't go on for ever so we either need to buy someone like Witsel who isn't very good or mould Barkley into that role. Surely it's worth giving it a shot. The last time I remember seeing Barkley totally dominate a game was against QPR. I know people will say it's only QPR but it was only Sunderland on Monday.

I do t think it's possible to mould Barkley into a Barry... Barry is one of our best players at 36.... He can do this because he uses the 6 inches between his ears... He is also home an intelligent footballer... Something that Barkley is not ... Barkley has raw talent

He couldn't be a direct replacement. Barry is our deepest player and you wouldn't want Ross doing that but I think he could play a similar role to Drinkwater. It would slightly change how we play but I think it would work.

I think he tries too hard but also has a lot of self doubt.

4 touches when 1 and a pass will do.
A pass instead of a shot.
A dribble instead of a pass.

I remember reading an article where he played a youth or a school match, I forget which, completely with his left foot just to see if he could do it. That's how he should be playing, for enjoyment. If he's enjoying what he's doing then he'll do no wrong because he's that good.

He is so good at turning in midfield and driving forward with the ball but then his brain must go into overload and he doesn't know what option to take when he should just take the first one he sees, the first thing he sees will be before anyone else so it's the best option.

For the record ... I see things in him that very few players have... But his performances for the last 18 months or so have been sub standard... And I don't mean just for his standards. The best game I have ever seen him have were against QPR and a couple against Norwich

I go every game mate.

And do you have that same strict view on ALL players ?? Number of times they lose the ball, make a mistake or do something wrong ??
If you do, then you must not rate any of our players!!

So did you not see Gerry lose the ball about 6 times ??? Fail to go past his player and fail with croses ???!!

Yes Mate I do have a dim view on all our players who mess up.

I do however give them a chance and never show my dismay at the ground...unlike some.

As I stated I wish he was world class and I would not automatically drop him for Gerri (based on Gerri's stamina though).

But likewise I'm not willing to ignore his shortcomings when we do now have alternatives to our lineup and style of play.

He has to knuckle down and get his head sorted and stop being a prima Donna and worrying that the effin chicken is too dry!

Sort it soft lad.

He's good, great even, on his day.

However... he isn't consistent enough and goes hiding relatively regularly, whether this is a confidence issue or not I don't know. Regardless however, he hasn't pushed on as much as I expected in the 3-4 years he's now been in and out of the first team.

In my opinion... by this point, with all his talent, I'd thought he would've been taking games by the scruff of the neck by now.

His best performances and games feel like years ago now.

That all being said, the fact he's still chipping in with goals and assists despite not being at what I perceive to be the top of his game is particularly promising.

One day he will make it huge with us.

He needs a little tough love. Martinez blew smoke up his ass and would not have taken him off last match. RK has no varnish - you're either cutting it or you're not. This could go either way - Barkley's confidence could be totally blown and Everton will be flogging him off Rodwell style or Barkley will figure it out, keep it simple and work his way back into the side.

Getting hauled off at the half and see the flow of the game completely swing Everton's way has to be jarring. Hopefully jarring in a beneficial way. Can't see RK not spending the effort to get Barkley back into the side.

Good managers deploy a different message to individual players. Some need what you suggest; others will wilt, and they my as well not be in the squad if you dont find common ground with them.

It's wrong to have a template with players and then squeeze out those with talent who dont fit into it.

I think people need to remember that he is still producing. Despite how crap he can appear at times, he influences games positively for the most part. He has had good games against top teams (Arsenal and City come to mind), so I don't think he takes advantage of relegation fodder or anything like that. His biggest enemy is himself, he needs to make things simpler. If a team isn't giving you options, hit it to the wingers or restart the attack with Barry. Don't force things that aren't there.

SIDE NOTE: he needs to just rip shots on the edge of the box. Doesn't do it nearly enough, and good things usually happen when he does.
