Ross Barkley

seen that earlier, but bet most of the ones he does are from the free kicks into the area, the corners, not a through ball for forward to run onto etc

7 chances? We had one shot all match... chipping a ball into the box from a corner isn't " creating" a chance ... this is why stats cannot be used to determine if a player is good or not... there are many factors but using stats like that is not accurate

Don't like saying it but Carragher summed it up perfectly:-

“He hasn’t got a problem physically or technically, it’s between the ears, his understanding of the game, his decision making, when should he pass, when he should run with the ball, when should he shoot,” Carragher said on Sky Sports‘ Friday Night Football show.

“Everyone feels he is a special talent but you can’t keep looking at David Moyes, Roberto Martinez and now Ronald Koeman, it’s got to be Ross Barkley – not that the manager is not getting enough out of him.

“He has to do more at this moment and we all believe he has the talent.”

I hated Carragher as a player but as a pundit he is one of the best around, this is spot on.

Things like this highlight why stats are useless, Rooney gets an assist for this "pass".

There were no 'serious flaws in his game'. He'd been chugging along putting in respectable performances, not world class, but not worthy of criticism. Koeman basically chose Ross because he's not a senior player but he is a big name in order to stamp his authority on the team.

It was ham fisted. It back fired. Let's hope he's learned his lesson about coming out swinging at players individually in public.
For me there were flaws in his game his lack of defensive work was his main one for me. He's a CM you have to help to defend in that position. Last season (and before) he seemed reluctant to commit , with the result that our midfield was overwhelmed despite having two Defensive mids. He isn't a talented winger like Sheedy who you can indulge as long as the rest of the midfield does its job. He plays centrally so has to work in defence and attack. I believe as last night showed he is improving.

I hope so.

I'm not sure if Everton can make it to January without a re-think of how the attack is set up. Barkley just cannot continue in the role he's playing.

It wouldn't be so bad if Pienaar had been adequately replaced, but he hasn't. It's getting on for three years since there's been a bit of craft or guile in the final third.

Martinez pretty much used him as a second striker who played way off Lukaku. He was seen as part of a lightening fast counter attacking unit with Lukaku and Mirallas/Deulofeu. That's how he got into the England team by showing how he could press the opposition back quickly from the half way line and link up with the attack ahead of him.

It's unfair to imply that Barkley was the main reason why the cm was over run at times last season. For me that could have been easily avoided with FBs who stayed back rather than attempting to bomb on and leaving McCarthy and Barry stretched to breaking point. But that was Roberto for you: he always wanted to get bodies forward and even outnumber the opposition when we could.

I agree with everything here except the final point.

You are basically saying Martinez needed to change to account for Barkley's laziness. Barkley is a decent player but he's not Zidane. He's not running games and dominating teams, scoring goals and getting assists. You could literally take the No 10 from any team in the league and I doubt it would make much of a difference.

He's a luxury that we have been indulging for 3 seasons who isn't performing. Koeman is right. He's not a boy any longer and it's time to either put in the work rate or increase his influence on the game.

He started well yesterday for one half but got lazy again in the 2nd half and that's why Palace started dominating us and then was rightly subbed.

Martinez didn't adapt his tactics and put his faith too much behind Barkley. It's no surprise in the end he had finally fallen out with him because it was Barkley that got Martinez sacked.

Sorry I know this is blunt and we don't want to hurt his fragile confidence but I'm sick of it. He either works harder or we need to sell him. At least Koeman is trying to fix him before he gives up on him.

Nail on the head mate, I've been saying that for the last couple of weeks
I am just going into the air raid shelter before I say.....He is not going to make it. Get rid! Him deeper means we will lose the midfield and the ball. He is not aggressive enough. Had his chance. He is a lower table/championship player and will have a good career. If we have higher aspirations then he is not the man.

Koeman has that responsibility. He gets paid more than any coach in Europe outside the giant clubs of the game. I expect him to earn that by getting Barkley's A game out on a regular basis. Not an unreasonable request I dont think.

I expect him to earn it by being successful and getting results for Everton Football Club personally but that's just me.

He's one of those players that you would be loaved to sell because there would always be the risk the penny would drop but in the meantime a player that would have you tearing your hair out.

Objectively speaking for other clubs when they have one like Barkley the penny very rarely drops.

.....RK has stated his players are having difficulty playing his 'energetic' style of football. This must be a particular change for Barkley after being given no real responsibility by previous regime when the opposition has the ball.
For gods sake. If throwing in a few tackles and chasing down takes time to learn they must be thick.
