No mate, no one is above criticism.

Ok. I personally think that honesty is best.

We all got fed up of Martinez' 'phenomenal' stuff. Sometimes tough love is what's needed.

The truth is sometimes hard to hear, and I don't think Koeman was malicious or nasty about it either.

I agree entirely. Really hope Ross is able to contribute to a big win tomorrow.

As Ron said to Lukaku and mentioned publicly, "I said to him it is always best to answer on the pitch."

He is our poster boy, so people will ask questions about him.

when you give the ball away as sloppily as he was the other night he is open to criticism as is any other player. People need to stop being so sensitive about Ross, he isn't a child any more.

He has shown some good form at times, he just needs consistency. Nothing Koeman said is over the top, bed wetters always need something to fret about though.
Yep, he will never improve if he keeps getting told that the bad parts of his game are okay

Ronald Koeman has made Ross Barkley sit through a video of his performance at Sunderland and explained to the Everton midfielder there is 'no escape' from how far his standards dropped.

The England international was substituted at half-time during Everton's 3-0 win at The Stadium of Light.

Koeman recognised it was a difficult decision to make, given Barkley had not been selected for Sam Allardyce's opening England squad, but insisted he had no option.

Barkley, Everton's manager reported, has responded positively in training but Koeman felt the need to show the 22-year-old a series of clips illustrating where he had gone askew on Monday and hopes it will jolt him back to the levels he had previously shown.

Significantly, though, Koeman refused to give any indication about whether Barkley, one of the brightest young talents in the country, will be left out of his starting line-up when Everton face Middlesbrough on Saturday.

'You play a match and analyse and of course there was a reason to change Ross,' said Koeman.

Arouna Kone battles for the ball with club captain Phil Jagielka on Thursday

'He did not play well and lost many balls. Players of that quality can't lose those kinds of balls. We analyse the game and have individual talks. I had it with Ross and he needs to improve.

'What counts is what happens now. You get game time for the national team because you play at a good level for your club.

It was one game what happened last Monday and he understands. He saw the clips and there is no escape. It is a difficult moment for the boy but he needs support.

Belgium striker Lukaku looks to hold up the ball from fellow team-mate Kevin Mirallas

'It's more how he used to play. He is strong enough to work harder and do better pressing.

'You look to his qualities and to be a key player between defenders and strikers, create and be part of the team. He can improve and needs to improve. He needs to do it by himself.'

Koeman's decision to substitute Barkley was the catalyst for a 3-0 win and he has made it clear to his squad that reputations do not make a difference to him – he will continue to make big calls regardless of which player is involved.

'It doesn't matter whether it is Barkley, (Romelu) Lukaku or (Gareth) Barry,' said Koeman. 'If a player is not at his level, then as a coach you think I need to something then I will do something. It is not about the name on the shirt.'

A new sheriff is in town. I think in the long term this will be a positive for Ross. I think it's fair to say he didn't progress much under Martinez and what's important is I think he will under Koeman.

Agreed, I pity the Belgium fans having to listen to that buffoon when they concede 10 goals in 10 minutes .........

Hope so mate.

I'll be happy if he just gets his form from the first 2/3 of last season back to start with.

If he moves on from there we'll have some player on our hands.

How is his form shot? Hasn't he scored twice this season already? In the same five games at least some of the site have determined that Stekelenburg is up there with Martyn, Gueye is better than league winner Kante and Ashley Williams could've defended Wales from becoming a principality had he been born early enough.

If you think he is playing well so be it. I don't, in fact I think its starting to become pitiful I honestly feel sorry for him, since arriving on the scene I would say he has progressively deteriorated. maybe he needs a wake up call instead of being consistently told he is phenomenal.

I think that until Moshiri stepped in Barklay was 2nd or 3rd in the selling cycle to fund Kenwrights businesses. Its always been that way, normally they get sold and the players stock plummets as its a media Everton led `next rooney` marketing sales campaign

Perhaps Barklay is just not as good as we thought and we also believed the hype, I sincerely hope Im wrong

The fact is now if a player is not performing he can be hauled off, which is good for the club, I do not think we should criticise Koeman for making what turns out to be the right decisions
We dont know what was said behind closed doors Koeman may have been constructive in what he said its up to Barklay to raise his game I would not feel betrayed I would want to prove myself and play 90 minutes every week, its debatable if Barklay has the right mental attitude to do this either way the team cannot carry him wins are wins Koeman is a winner Martinez was a loser simples
First off, Koeman has proven himself neither a winner or loser yet.
Second (and again) this is not a questioning of the right of a manager to manage, just how he gets the message across and who to is the issue.
Third, yes, I agree that this may well be a case of Barkley being viewed as surplus to requirements and the softening up sale process is underway.

On that last point though: Koeman says he's a player who can fill the #10 role (personally I think he's wrong. He isn't blessed with the quick feet and thinking you need for that role), but he can also play one of the two CM places. He's right on that, so try him in there before letting rip. I'm not sure that Koeman really believes Barkley can do the role though. He's like most managers of non-elite clubs: he likes to go belt and braces with two that will get a foot in and/or screen the back four. Barkley cant do either, imo. He can play further back in a team that is so good everywhere else that they can afford to go with one out and out destroyer and leave the other CM to be there to mop up and drive forward with the ball.

So, basically, I think it boils down to this (in private or public) Koeman's message to Barkley is to adapt to the requirement of a non-elite club in that area of the park or it my be best if we sell you on to a team that can use your more specialised skills.

The problem is mate that while he clearly has all the technique in the world, he just might not have the speed of thought required to be absolutely brilliant. But I think currently we can carry him while he plays his way into form - and we might as well do it against the dross like Stoke and Sunderland (particularly as their midfield are so weak)
Where would you play Ross tomorrow and at the expense of who?

Fair point, however he is off to a great start and long may he continue on this `winning streak`
Martinez is a proven loser we all know that

Managers of these clubs have a larger talent pool, they can pick and choose, players like Rodwell, Wright Phillips got benched as they didnt fit
from early on. Elite club managers are ruthless, thats why they become elite. Barklay has probably never had a manager like Koeman not blowing smoke up him, personally I think the lad with pick his game up and become an overall better player, he will probably thank Koeman in the process.

I can see a big win tommorrow I hope Barklay plays a part in it

No, we dont. Our best record in the PL; an FA Cup winner. If Koeman achieves that with us will you call him a loser?

Elite club managers when they identify and invest in a player tend to make sure they're more than encouraged. And they wont buy someone unless they have a specific task for them to do. If Barkley leaves for a United or City or Chelsea it'll be for a tailor made role and not having to be a jack of all trades. He's got what it takes. I'd go by the word of top class midfielders like Xavi and Lampard that he can make the step up.

He progressed from playing at Leeds where he was called back from to a player now with 22 international caps for England.
I think people are making the mistake of judging his progress based on the last 10 weeks of RMs reign, when practically all of the squad had stopped playing. He needs to be judged on his overall progress which I believe was significant. He had a great first year. The second year, whilst disappointing, was disrupted by injury but also teams were now aware of him and working to counter his strengths. He had to learn to cope with an overcome this. Think you'll see this with Dele Alli this season too. But last season he was excellent for 6 months and up there with Mahrez, Alli and Payet in my view. The same people are saying John Stones didn't improve under Martinez which is clearly silly. He was a 19 yo kid with no premier 1st team experience before RM got him.

The fact is, neither player had developed as much as we fans wanted. But that's a different argument in which you need to question our expectations against reality. Both of them play in positions that normally takes years to mature into.

Honestly I don't think he has improve much. His first game against Norwich is Martinez's first season is still one of my favourite performances from him. Pace power and directness. A goal threat and that's what we need him to be.
