If Koeman wanted to avoid Martinez's mistake he'd have binned the barrack room lawyers who downed tools intentionally not a boy who gives his all when he takes to the pitch.

I'm sorry, he's needlessly hung a talented and good lad out to dry here...maybe because he doesn't fancy taking on a serial moaner like Mirallas or a misfiring Lukaku.

I support Koeman, but I tell you what he will store up some ill feeling if he continues a line that throws his players to the dogs like he has today. Up to him. He'll either be a roaring sucess and win stuff and thereby get away with stunts like this, or he'll be bang average or worse and players will have him out.

Isn't it a good job he didn't take Lukaku off? Was anyone else in with a chance of scoring a hat trick?

What is he to say? Just tell them he felt anyone of four could have been hooked and it was his decision to take off RB. Job done. Then he can bollock till his hearts content at FF.

It's that simple.

There is NO excuse for doing this in public and it's instructive that no one on this thread has sought to address that or counter it.

Sorry Dave but again i don't agree. Ronald said today in the press conference he showed him the clips of the game where Ross was giving the ball away too cheaply and in too dangerous an area. As in RK's words there is nowhere to hide. Yes there were players who were not up to speed first half, but in my eyes, Ross was far and away the main culprit and obviously the manager agrees. He has clearly spoken to Ross about this behind the scenes so its not as if this is coming as some revelation that Ross wasn't expecting?

If Idrissa Gueye had a bad half it wouldn't even have made the match report never mind still be talked about now.

Koeman subbed a player having a poor game, as managers should. Said player is a bright young English talent so the media make it a big thing. Koeman gives honest and forthright account.

Leave them to it.

Ronald Koeman has made Ross Barkley sit through a video of his performance at Sunderland and explained to the Everton midfielder there is 'no escape' from how far his standards dropped.

The England international was substituted at half-time during Everton's 3-0 win at The Stadium of Light.

Koeman recognised it was a difficult decision to make, given Barkley had not been selected for Sam Allardyce's opening England squad, but insisted he had no option.

Barkley, Everton's manager reported, has responded positively in training but Koeman felt the need to show the 22-year-old a series of clips illustrating where he had gone askew on Monday and hopes it will jolt him back to the levels he had previously shown.

Significantly, though, Koeman refused to give any indication about whether Barkley, one of the brightest young talents in the country, will be left out of his starting line-up when Everton face Middlesbrough on Saturday.

'You play a match and analyse and of course there was a reason to change Ross,' said Koeman.

Arouna Kone battles for the ball with club captain Phil Jagielka on Thursday

'He did not play well and lost many balls. Players of that quality can't lose those kinds of balls. We analyse the game and have individual talks. I had it with Ross and he needs to improve.

'What counts is what happens now. You get game time for the national team because you play at a good level for your club.

It was one game what happened last Monday and he understands. He saw the clips and there is no escape. It is a difficult moment for the boy but he needs support.

Belgium striker Lukaku looks to hold up the ball from fellow team-mate Kevin Mirallas

'It's more how he used to play. He is strong enough to work harder and do better pressing.

'You look to his qualities and to be a key player between defenders and strikers, create and be part of the team. He can improve and needs to improve. He needs to do it by himself.'

Koeman's decision to substitute Barkley was the catalyst for a 3-0 win and he has made it clear to his squad that reputations do not make a difference to him – he will continue to make big calls regardless of which player is involved.

'It doesn't matter whether it is Barkley, (Romelu) Lukaku or (Gareth) Barry,' said Koeman. 'If a player is not at his level, then as a coach you think I need to something then I will do something. It is not about the name on the shirt.'

Funny that Baines was a martyr last year when the manager used a press conference to question his professionalism. Martinez was pilloried for it, but Koeman is praised for doing the same thing.

Make your mind up.

lol lol lol

You can't keep a good man down ;)

That's my point. That's the only thing required.

Telling a handful of trough snuffling hacks that Barkley is under the microscope is the issue.

What annoys me is that Ross played well in the opening four games.....the vitriol being posted about the lad on here is preposterous.

Whilst I fully support the his substitution the other night.....though it could just as easily have Mirallas whom was hooked.....I sincerely hope Ross is on from the start this Saturday.

And I think he will be.

Never really bought the fact that he's unequivocally this great player, just out of form/lacking in confidence/out of position etc (whatever this weeks excuse is).

Anyway. Koeman for me screams one word - 'standards'. Drop below them and you will be out of the team. Remain below them and you will be out of the club.

That gives Ross a problem. Hopefully he'll take this kick up the arse the right way.

Don't see what the problem is here. Ross had a stinker in the 1st half against sunland(?) and deserved to be subbed.
Koeman has said he's worked with him about where he was going wrong. Ross has responded well in training. That's it, he's still our best player and under RK will improve. The public offerings are probably more to do with RK being questioned about RB being left out the Eng team.
Nothing to see, it's a team sport and he'll prob score and assist a couple against boro'.

That's a good point actually (the timing of it). If Koeman had done this when we were struggling you could say "gutsy to do that when things aren't going well on the pitch." However, it feels like he's using a bit of capital built up over the past month to lay down the law to a kid who hasn't got the seniority to hit back.

As said, in other posts: when Lukaku was stinking the place out where was the public bollocking?
Think you're over reacting to this mate.

I'm one of Ross's biggest supporters on here. However, Monday night he had possibly the worst half I've seen him play in the 3 years since he became established. I agree Mirallas and Lukaku were also poor first half but Koeman made the decision to substitute Ross. It was a purely footballing decision which proved to be the correct one judging by our second half performance. It shows that the manager is not afraid to make hard calls and I think the majority of fans, me included, welcome this. Ross has not been singled out here. Koeman has treated McCarthy, Funes Mori, Del and Holgate in similar fashion.

The difference is Ross is a big player and a big name, not just at Everton but in England generally, so what happened is big news. When fat Sam picked his last England squad, it wasn't Rashford or Wilshire who raised most eyebrows by their omission. it was Ross.

So Koeman was asked the question and he answered it the way he always does. With honesty. He wasn't overly critical of Ross, just saying what we all knew was true anyway, that his performance in the first half on Monday was well below what we expect from somebody with his talent. If he'd been asked the same question about somebody else I believe he would have answered equally truthfully, and I'm sure in the past he's also criticised both Kev and Del for not pressing enough, and the squad as a whole for not being fit enough.

As regards Rom, when exactly has he stunk the place out since Koeman's been in charge?. He had practically no pre-season before getting injured. He missed the first game with injury, came on against WBA and helped change the course of the game. Missed chances against both Yeovil and Stoke, but applied himself well and hardly stank!!. When asked by the press what he expected of Rom, Koemans answer was "a lot" and he even had a sly dig at him "talking too much" during his post match interview from the Sunderland game.

There's no way Ross has been hung out to dry. And the insinuation that Koeman is using his popularity to bully Ross and get away with it is actually quite comical.

Why do I get the feeling that, despite all your previous pro Koeman posts, you've been waiting all along for something like this to happen to jump on his back.
