Roberto's Barkley Bid Comment

Did anyone else notice another subtly brilliant answer he gave?

When asked "Do you think this potential bid from United will have an affect on Ross", I was fully expecting a "no, no, no Ross is happy here, he's not looking to leave" type answer.

Bobby turned it on it's head. He said "It should do". Whaaaaaa? "It's a compliment". No we've heard the "compliment" thing before, but I just love that he took that question and instead of answering "no" he answered "yes" and explained why it was a good thing.

I think that is very illuminating into the way the man thinks and communicates to the outside world. 19 out of 20 managers in the prem would have answered that question no, and then gone into a lengthy discussion defending their club and why the player should stay. Bobby simple smiled and said "yes and it's going to be a positive impact on the player".

Honestly he's the Gold Standard.

damn i love that man

I'm not that gud at spilling either mate, please forgove me. As for Deulofeu, I don't think he's easily replaceable with the funds at our dipsosal, we're missing his impact already.

Name me a player then who can replace him

He brought in Mccarthy and Barry and surprised everyone. I've no doubt he'll do the same on the wings. Surprise everyone.

People maybe taking his comments about 'long term' and 'window to window' too literally. He's basically saying he views each window as an opportunity to strengthen and he operates between them.

The long term comes from introducing more players like Barkley and Deulofeu and Stones into the team.

Think martinez will continue to surprise. Was initially concerned him bringing in too many 'oldies' in Barry, Kone and Alcaraz. But think that was a one off when he first arrived to give us an initial boost.

Generally he will purchase players in the 18-24 yr old range unless their free-agents.

Certainly the Wigan relegation, who sold players to fund themselves will not be the case at Everton. Not anymore due to the BT money and God-willing the Champions League money too.

I love Bobby as much as anyone else; love his tactics, humour, attacking football, his classiness in interviews etc. Believe me I am 99.9% happy with everything that's happened since he came in. The one comment from him I didn't love was the bit about going from one transfer window to the next, and not going for long-term. It worried me a bit, should it have? Everything is wonderful now and I'm loving it, but don't forget some of our key players are loan signings. Things could seem a lot worse 12 months from now (sorry, it's my inner pessimist).

I also don't get though all the anti-Moyes comments on here, I really don't. Moyes did build teams for the future and brought in many good players cheaply who were ours for the long-term, and fought hard to get good prices for them eg. Lescott. Sure - I lost a hell of a lot of respect for Moyes with what went on with Baines and Felliani in the summer, but last year we also played some pretty good football too under him. With regards Barkley's development, yes maybe Moyes was too slow to play him, but also Michael Owen said his career was shortened by being overplayed too much when too young at Liverpool, and that if he'd been at United from a young age he would have lasted a lot longer.

I'm a big Bobby fan, but I don't think that liking Bobby means that we have to indulge in Moyes-revisionism. Compared to the rest of football I think both are classy managers - thou Moyes a bit less so now of course, but he's doing right by his new club

This is exactly why I love RM. Rumors aren't always true, but let's assume the United interest in Barkley is true--why would Moyes look to buy him in January for £50m? Barkley isn't what United needs now. Moyes could have had Ozil for less than that price, and there are plenty of other great options for that price that can help United now. Sure, Barkley could be great for United in the future, but the speculation is silly and underscores what's wrong with Moyes' style (whether the rumors are true or not).

A manager must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. Moyes, a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was, what he was doing...

Roberto knows what the future holds, but he hasn't shown that hand yet. He is managing a team now, and he will make transfers based both on the future and the here and now. I'm excited for tomorrow, to see what he plans to do with the window, and I'd be happy if he got his business done early this window as well.

You have to hand it to Roberto, He is very articulate and has a great deal of respect and gets it back from the press. Refrains from criticising other clubs and managers. He could give our EX a few lessons.

Exactly. He's managing an excellent side with a few new additions and getting more out of those players that were already in place.. but it's not "his" side yet. Give him a few more transfer windows and we'll see his idea for the future of Everton.

Good spot mate, he could sell snow to the eskimos our Bob or defuse bombs with a smile he's the James Bond of British football managers

Yup, disarms them with a quip and a joke.

Reminds me of Ronald Reagan.

Yeah superb comeback. For the first time in ages you are tempted to think that we may have actually abandoned the policy of selling our best players which has been going on now since the seventies.

But then again probably not.

How could you NOT want to play for the man? Always positive, always encouraging, and he's clearly smarter than most about actual football. I think as his reputation spreads, you'll see more quality players clamoring to come here and fewer top players wanting to leave. Money will always factor in, but that aside Bobby is the best recruitment tool we have.

Just sent an email to Sky news complaining about talking up the Ross Barkley/Utd thing.

The cheeky pricks used Bobby's presser showing the bit where he says players should be pleased with the attention but not the far more salient "loan" joke that puts it in context.

If you want to copy here it is:

"If you're going to make up a Utd move for Ross Barkley as per the piece on the news here's an idea - show the salient part of the Roberto Martinez press conference where he quips 50 million being a "loan" deal for Ross thus nailing the piece stone dead.

Oh hang on that would make your story a load of bollocks!!

Bloody amateurs."

That is Radio City's Alan Irwin asking most of the questions. After Roberto's humorous remark about not letting anyone out on loan in January there is delayed laughter by most present and then Irwin says "I didn't think it was that funny".

I just don't think he got the joke!

That really doesn't sound like Alan Irwin to me. I don't think it is him
