Just watching the match now and thought to myself how much Jags, Baines and Coleman have improved as players and how strong our defence is with them in it.
Anyway, I digress - the reason for posting is to add my penny's worth on Martinez. Who isn't my preferred candidate for the role. But in all honesty, I don't know who ever was.
The team today represents 11 years of hard graft by
Moyes and I'll always look upon him in the highest regard for changing our fortunes. He did a brilliant job despite failing to win any silverware (you could question why in recent seasons with a team as good as ours but I just felt it was never going to happen with
Moyes - a combination of bad luck and Moyes' failure to win the 'big one-offs' whether it be picking the wrong team or getting it wrong tactically).
So when I looked at the potential candidates for the job it stunk of 'average - good'. Except for Lennon. At first I wanted Laudrup but on closer examination his managerial record isn't great (even at Swansea which surprised me so had it not been for Michu who knows what would have happened with the Swans this season).
Then I got on the Perriera band wagon in a big way. Foreign, lost one in two seasons, wears an armband - I was all over it. Then the reality came that he would be a massive gamble.
So now it looks like its going to be Martinez. One of his traits which comes across is his integrity. He's an Everton man in this regard. Not like that other two faced egotistical former prick Rodgers. The second thing I like is the way he plays football; although Wigan were clueless at the back (which I put down to personnel and not tactical ineptness) they were great to watch. That performance against City in the final was inspiring.
Martinez's transfer record is a bit hit and miss. He's still learning his trade as a manager and will be with us so I expect a couple of mistakes along the way.
Ultimately I'm confident he'll do a good job if appointed. I don't buy into the attitude 'oh we'll finish 8th, 10th etc next season'. It's going to be a transition changing Moyes team and will take time. Firstly Jags is going to need to learn how to pass a ball on the deck! But I don't see any reason we can't still compete for 5th next season with a few good additions. COYB
