Roberto Martinez discussion

Ok again you are changing the statistics to suit what you want, what about the last 70 games if that works hahaha. You have gone from talking about his last 3 seasons win percentage to 1 in 4, to 7 games.

Tell you what in them 7 games (i presume you are talking prem) we have won 2. We have a better defensive record in them game because martinez was FORCED to make changes at the back - Did you see Martinez dropping Howard?!? probably won't get an answer to that though.

No point even trying to have debate really - your view is right and you don't see anything else for a balanced debate. Carry on bending anything you want to your outlook.

At least with some pro-martinez people on here you can have a debate with and they see points.

I wouldn't bother mate. His stats remind me of the pointless ones they put on SSN to make a player look good. Most dribbles attempted, longest throw ins, longest clearances, passes attempted and all other garbage like that.
There is always a stat somewhere that will make a situation look better or worse than it actually is.

It's a fair point entirely to say we are getting on top of this and the needle is stuck:

We have conceded 7 goals in the last 7 games.

Goals conceded in the rest of the PL in that time:

Leicester 4
Spurs 5
Arsenal 5
City 8
United 8
S'ton 1
West Ham 8
Liverpool 14
Watford 8
Stoke 13
Chelsea 7
Palace 25
WBA 8
Bournemouth 10
Swansea 10
Norwich 18
Newcastle 15
Sunderland 12
Villa 12

...which puts us 5th best on that list.

As said. Time to get the needle off that stick groove, or more preferably change the record.

We've won 2 out of the last 7 league games which is less than his usual 1 in 3 win percentage. Quite what conceding at a rate of 1 a game over a small sample when we have the worst home defensive record in Europe has to do with anything is beyond me.

I'd be surprised if there was a massive difference in the lineup they made the following signings from May to present; Kevin Wimmer, Trippier, Alderweireld, N'Jie, Son.

Things have just clicked - they look to be playing a higher pressing game, watching them against city last week the amount of players they had pushing up the pitch was ridiculous. We used to do that, right now I see more of our players backing off then pressing the ball.

January 2016.

Seems a lot different. Spurs have signed players in the summer???

If your point is the pressing game then they do press a lot. But against City they pressed them when City came into their half.

'Things have just clicked' in which case it can happen to any team including us.

Don't be rude SD.
A worthy adversary should be responding to my earlier post to you.

Erm yes, I did indeed see him dropping Howard. Thanks for asking.

Lol.

The figures are always 'last this and last that' one's from the dissidents, so what better way to give them what they want and keep it to latest trends?

As said: the last two months worth of PL football have seen us clean up our act and the figures produced prove it. 7 conceded in that time and only bettered by three at the top of the league plus S'ton.

The defensive record is getting better. A point that has to be conceded unless you're Mr Magoo.

And yet the fact remains that (contrary to the popular view) the defensive record is getting better.

7 goals conceded in the last two months,

5th best record in the PL in that time.

Time to change the well worn record on defensive weakness. We're putting it right and the facts back that up. But feel free to carry on ignoring the facts.

All I can see is a manager struggling to win enough games. When he opens the scoring tap a bit we're wide open at the back, when he tightens things up we struggle to score enough to win. The league table is the only fact I need.

We're talking about what should be one of the country's foremost football managers here and he's getting lavished with praise for only conceding 1 a game for a 7 game period (a period we only won two league games in). Are standards really that low? When he is rattling off successive wins and has us where we should be in the table I won't care how many we're scoring or conceding.

Whatever stats you choose to bring up, the overall formula is currently wrong. When Martinez addresses that I'll have no issue with him.

You can have that debate about Martinez all day long. But this is specifically related to the constant criticism that the defence is weak and Martinez cant get it right. Well the past couple of months results dont bear that view out. They point in the opposite direction that the defence are getting more frugal and performing better than three quarters of all other PL defences.

Defensive record is getting better - based on an injury forcing Martinez to drop Howard.

Not dropped after his howlers, because of an injury. But Martinez was gonna drop him anyway.

Yeah ok.

Yes and the results stay the same, 1 in 3 win ratio. For the last 18 months Martinez has not been able to find a consistent balanced footballing style. Other managers have in shorter time frames.
