Automatic pension enrolment is into its 10th year. truss played around with tax cuts and the BoE had to step in to prop up certain markets to the tune of £65Billion. (mid october 2022). When reckless decisions are made by chancers like that bucket of dog vomit someone has to pick up the bill, because general taxation will eventually not be able to cope. BoE stepped in this time. Should certain pension markets face difficulty again, the BoE doesn't have unlimited funds to throw around, so throw in a possible 'run on the pound' add a round of QE and sky scraper inflation we'll all be trillionaires worth less than a tin of beans.

I do appreciate what you say and you are right. The problem is that I don’t see any political party looking to address the issue you raise above, but I feel that no one who votes does so for the purpose of keeping people down, even if that’s how it seems to those affected. I’m sort of lost for words now, because I can’t really see an answer other than government and lender assistance for the first time buyers.……
I don't really see what can be done, I think we're past that point - certainly short term anyway. I suppose it would be nice to a government who prioritise the masses, rather than the rich.

I'm one of four cousins and I'll be the third of us to leave the country for good in April. And that's a sorry state.

Reforming planning laws would be a start. This was probably the only decent thing in Truss proposed. Suffice to say, Sunak has scrapped it.

To a lot of the older generation of Tory voters who cannot see past the end of their nose, it really would not matter if Labour could actually make things better, make their lives better, make the lives of their family better. It's more important to vote for a poorer life for the workers, the unemployed, the disabled, immigrants.
Got think about Salop leisure and Garden centers up and down the country.

I just don't see how affordable housing can exist without bringing down general property prices - ergo a vote loser. And that would have to be in a quantity not feasible. Perhaps that's why we don't see any. More new builds isn't the answer - it needs to be affordable, else you're serving property speculators in the end.

Houses aren't expensive because of the costs involved in building them. They're expensive because not enough of them exist. The demand for houses, due both to a growing population and changing demographic trends like more people living alone, has far outstripped the available supply. That's why they're so expensive. The only reason we have speculators is because they're the only ones that can afford to buy.

TBF the whole notion of buying houses promotes speculation anyway. Modern Tories bang on about Singapore all the time but seemingly forget that the vast majority of people rent properties from the state.

Council houses.

Pissing off slumlords would be a lovely side effect

A law against multiple home ownership might help…..

There isn't a pensions black hole as there isn't a pension fund that needs to be contributed to. Pensions are paid for out of general taxation so pensions will just consume more of the general government spending.

Let’s not forget that the U.K. had a very well funded private pension system until Gordon Brown stole billions from it and ruined the whole pensions industry…..

Singaporeans can live happily in high density, public housing because they are built to a high standard and are occupied by decent, honest , law abiding citizens. And better to rent off the state than individuals.

Singapore is one of the most desirable places to live in the world. We could learn a lot if we followed their principles...

It’s certainly a very clean and law abiding place to live, drug dealers don’t last long……

But we don't have the same opportunities Pete. I earn just over the double the wage national average and I absolutely no chance in purchasing the type of home I lived in growing up (on my father's single wage, by the way). If I have no chance, what chance do the 80% of the workforce who earn less than me have? At least I can buy something, many can't afford even that. And in my mind, if that is a basic human right...you work full-time and have saved a deposit...you should be able to buy a property.

I'm 36 and it's more than likely that only reason I'll be able to retire is because of inheritance - this isn't right, Pete and it's only getting worse. The people stuck renting all their lives are going to die on their feet.

My mother bought a house for £90K in 2001 as a single mother. Twenty years later, she earns £1500 per month renting it out and that's her retirement money.

So I do get resentful when I see the older generation so dismissive of modern day problems and worse still actively vote for it to remain this way.
i am 12 years older and one of four, and similar to you growing up only my dad worked full time and my mum stayed home to look after us kids and the household, we lived in a really nice house and had a sort of comfortable life, pretty much like all my friends at the time. My grandparents on both sides helped out my folks in the early days and passed on their wealth when they passed.

What I have seen in my life is that you now need two people to be earning in the household on reasonable income to afford a house that is sub what my parents could afford!. It's not just the cost of the house itself but all the other bills like council tax and water bills that didn't exist in the current format back then, well not like they are now.

What is the cause?. We have had both political parties in power for extended periods during those years from the 70's and we were also a member of the EU .

The older generation are not to blame, because I would say most pass on their wealth to their children in life and when they pass but also need to have a means to live in retirement and also provide means to care for themselves when they become infirm.

We are on our way back to the 1800s.
