relative media coverage

On the general discussion in this thread, many are missing the point that the principal reason the RS/Utd/Arsenal etc have the media commercial interest is precisely because past and present media coverage is biased towards the successful clubs.

Nail hit firmly on head.

And when the PL was set up and Sky was getting going, EFC was as successful as both United and Arsenal.

We missed the boat....pure and simple.

We were left behind both on and off the pitch as those clubs grew along with Sky.....the way we should have done.

Manchester City are now one of the big draws on Sky.

That is bugger all to do with Sky being "biased" toward them.....a few years ago you'd hardly have seen Citeh on Sky.

Ditto Chelsea in the early years of Sky's coverage.

But they got successful and now they are big players on Sky.

If and when we start getting in among the honours and are consistenly playing in the CL and involved in Title challenges then Everton will be talked about more on Sky and in the meejah generally.

Simple as.

Actually we were more successful than United, as we'd won the league 9 times and they had only won it 7 times when the PL started in 1992. They also hadn't won the league for 25 years up to that point.

So much of their total non-success prior to the PL era has been whitewashed from public perception.

Money and being in the right place at the right time changed everything, which is why when people always go on about how bigger a club they are and how that's always been the case, all that just makes me laugh.

We were both formed in 1878, and for the first 114 years of our existence, we'd achieved more league titles than they had.

Yes....and I think I am right in saying we had been Champions more times than Arsenal up to that point as well.

It's like that line from Champagne Supernova......."where were you while we were getting high"

While Arsenal and United were getting high, we were being ruined by Peter Johnson.

It's amazing how often you read pieces in the Press and in books about Everton that include a phrase to the effect that we have always had to live in the shadow of the RS. Ignorance at its very worst. On occasions in the past I've taken the authors to task on such comments (the beauty of e-mailing) but have never had a response.

but thats taking it to a whole new level - that was really the case from the 60s onwards wasnt it?

Well is simple, Liverpool and Man Utd are Englands biggest clubs. Liverpool 5 times CL winners & Man Utd 3 Times. Of course they are going to be the glamour clubs

It's very simple.

The media is a fully commcerialised enterprise. Profits are their chief concern and that dictates all their decision making: armchair fans might not go the game, but they can pay for TV subscriptions. The clubs most associated with armchair bandwagon jumpers get the most fawning coverage in hope of prizing cash from these soulless gloryhunters.

Seem to remember reading (possibly in this thread!) that something like Manchester United vs Exeter got more viewers than Arsenal vs Barcelona in the same week.

History lesson boys.

Why are Man U and the Shoite the biggest clubs?

MOTD began in 1964....the manure and shoite shared the first 4 championships in the MOTD era. People saw them winning and hey presto their huge armchair "me too" nationwide and Irish fanbases.

Simple as that. Right time to be winning.

If MOTD had started half a dozen years earlier millions in Ireland and Norway and Surrey woud now be following Wolves and Spurs.
