Where did I say Rooney wasn't world class? I said he was somebody that showed fantastic potential as a 17 year old, but that he never took the step up to become that "special" talent that Pele, Maradona, and Ronaldo were, and Messi still is. But at 17 you'd have put money on Rooney being the best of them.

I also said Mbappe hasn't taken the step up to that special level yet, but you can't deny the kid is already world class.

I guess 'special talent' ranks higher than world class for you so just a matter of words. I would still argue that Rooney has affected games about as often as any of those you mentioned.

If we had already brought in and spent the 10s of millions needed for a St, cb, cm and winger (who can play right now) , I'd be really excited about also spending 40m on this lad.

As it is, I just hope this 40m doesn't lead to scrimping and saving on these other positions we need or deciding not to invest in them at all this window.

I suppose it depends on whether you want to look at it over a short time horizon (ie just next season) or over the medium to long term (over the next 3-5) seasons.

I was naming players who you could tell were special from a very young age. 4 of them went on to be some of the best players the world has ever seen. Rooney, in my opinion, didn't. He was still world class, but not amongst the very elite for me. At 17/18 though, he was so good the expectation was that he would join that elite list. I actually believe he peaked at 18, and I put that down to Manchester United who, by making him more of a team player, actually coached the maverick out of him.

Anyway, this new kid also looks the real deal so lets hope the stories are true.

Ha ha, feel your pain, I am exactly the same. I think I’ve been psychologically damaged over the last few years by riquelme, Fernandes and so on.
