Rooney's first season in the premier league was the stuff of dreams. I remember him making Bolton look stupid, in particular. Oh, and the time he skinned Darren Moore do easily he went back and did it again 2 seconds later.

Back then I was a student and didn't have the money for tickets very often so I used to go to some of the youth games. I remember the semi final of the youth FA Cup against Villa and being genuinely unbelieving at how much better he was than everybody else on the field.

I remember first seeing him in a really poor pre-season game at Shrewsbury. Rooney came on for the last 15 minutes or so and though he didn't score, he did everything but.
Never ever been so excited by any player on first view and of course he was just 16 at the time.

The semi final was against Tottenham where he absolutely shone. Final was 2 legs against Villa, we lost. 17 years dulls the memory somewhat.

If we had already brought in and spent the 10s of millions needed for a St, cb, cm and winger (who can play right now) , I'd be really excited about also spending 40m on this lad.

As it is, I just hope this 40m doesn't lead to scrimping and saving on these other positions we need or deciding not to invest in them at all this window.

Nonsense, Rooney was a world class player and proved it over the course of his career. Just because England could never sort themselves out on the international stage doesn't mean he wasn't one of the best in the world
Where did I say Rooney wasn't world class? I said he was somebody that showed fantastic potential as a 17 year old, but that he never took the step up to become that "special" talent that Pele, Maradona, and Ronaldo were, and Messi still is. But at 17 you'd have put money on Rooney being the best of them.

I also said Mbappe hasn't taken the step up to that special level yet, but you can't deny the kid is already world class.

That's why its not really making much sense to me. We as a club have always ran in the manner we sell (usually for profit) and use that cash to bring in others. That is how we operate, stats are facts and its proving to be the same again so far this summer. We need at least another 4 players excluding the Kean transfer today that allows us to go into the season comfortable. The likes of Onyekuru, McCarthy, Schneiderlin, Bolasie will bring in around 70 m and that will be slapped on a CB and a winger, with Arias arriving on loan.

I mentioned earlier that the link with this kid smells of ' We have the worlds best under 17 talent and want to cash in for a similar deal like we did last summer with Vinicius Jr, highest bidder please or he will end up at Everton come January...…. its your problem '. It reeks of that. No way would a club like ours dump 40 million on a kid that has yet to play a single senior game for his own club, and who cannot contribute to our side for months or even until next season, and with our current 1st team squad lacking in coverage for the season ahead.

Two things and I've highlighted them above.

1. Rooney was world class. Should be zero debate over this.

2. You obviously haven't been an Evertonian for long because Wayne Rooney at this same age was wow-ing me and others; hence why 99.9% of evertonians were gutted when he left, with some still not forgiving him for it. Utd changed molded him into a different player but make no mistake the Rooney that was briefly in our 1st team squad back in his teenage years and for England at the same time was a talent we rarely see.
Okay.
1. I never said Rooney wasn't world class. I said he never took the next step up to be very special and be spoken of in the same terms as Pele, Ronaldo (the Brazilian one), Maradona and Messi. If you think I'm wrong fine, but I'd stand by that statement all day long. Rooney is possibly the finest English player of all time. He is the best that I have ever seen at the age of 17/18 and I have said often on here that Everton saw the best years if Wayne Rooney. I whole-heartedly agree that he was genuinely world class up until he was about 27/28.

2. I must have watched hundreds, possibly thousands of these player youtube videos and I have literally never gone "wow" before. Never. When Rooney was 17/18 we didn't have these videos, I'm not sure I even owned a computer FFS. If we had, I'm sure I would have watched one of Rooney and gone "wow".

Fair enough mate

But lets be honest.... The lad hasn't played one single senior game yet as far as I'm aware and if I was decent at editing videos, clipping here and there and had the time, I could probably almost make Aruna Kone look like a world beater. Though on the other hand I doubt the current Everton backroom staff haven't done their homework (if its all true of course).

But fair enough I get what you're saying now

If it was an English 17 year old who had won player of the tournament every time he played in one and every media outlet were bigging him up to be the next Gazza...also 331,000 followers on instagram before even a senior debut i think we'd all be pretty excited...especially when hes rated the top prospect u18 in world football by some.

I saw a quote from his manager (i think) saying 17 year olds are too young to be on the pitch...

The £40mil is going to be structured payments. Even so, what would it be worth to risk on a player our scouts think is going to be world class?

We can only sign potentially world class players or washed up ones. Kean, Richarlison and perhaps this chap may all become world class...or perhaps none of them will.

But we need to take the risk.

OK

Let's go back to my post and what it was about. It was about players who, from a very early age, you could see had that x factor. That they were very special indeed. Players that don't come along too often. I listed 6. 4 of them went on to become some of the best players ever. 1 didn't (but I hope you now realise that wasn't a criticism of Wayne) and 1 the jury is still out on and only time will tell whether he will be known as special.

That video of Reinier, whilst only 4 minutes long, showed enough to me to confirm that he too is a special talent at his age. I accept that these videos can oft overhype the players, but it's as obvious as the days long that this kid oozes quality. If you can't see it then I'd seriously question your football knowledge.

As I said in my post, that doesn't mean that he'll turn out to be as good as those mentioned earlier. But I think it's fair to say he'll be a bit better than Aruna Kone.

Apology accepted by the way.

Seen contrasting reports on the reliability of the fella’s that broke this news the other day.

The fact they think Neymar going on loan to Flamengo is a genuine possibility suggests to me they may not be too clued in.

The first source that came out with the story a few weeks back are regarded as the gospel over there but the latest reports come from Marcelo Bechler and Bruno Formiga who aren’t too highly regarded.

Said this yesterday. Meanwhile everyone is up Rooney’s hoop

I still stand by that it reeks of ' We will sell for 40+ million to the highest bidder, don't miss out on this once in a lifetime deal '.

The whole thing stinks for me.
