Something Starmer could do right away is remove the absurd ban on people working while their asylum claims are being processed (and also the equally absurd restrictions on "what" jobs they can do even when their claims are successful).
I fully support the idea however my problem is the environment, created over the past decade and longer and I wonder if given we’re in a virtual tinderbox would it reignite things .

I’ll stress If you ask me purely do I support the idea , I do but do I support it in the current environment I honestly don’t know and I’m sorry if that reflects badly on me or makes me a coward I just want to navigate our way out of this horrendous situation .

Bit edgy like, perfectably sensible and normal to hold two notions or even more on a subject in one's head. Something that's not allowed in UK debate for some reason. Your either 100% comitted or against.

I'm just not sure what we gain from preventing people from working? It costs us money, it prevents society from benefiting from the skills of those coming here, it harms their own ability to integrate (and their career prospects longer term). There seems literally no benefit at all, other than to appear "tough".

I just feel the usual suspects would jump on it and weaponise it just at things seem to be potentially calming down a bit .

I don’t want to dismiss the idea just thinking today might not be the optimum time

The fascist argument (which they already incorrectly use towards asylum seekers) is that they are “taking our jobs”. It will give farage and co more grounding in their hate.

I agree, asylum seekers should be allowed to work. But understand @Harryflashman ’s view and right now (or even starting discussing it in the near future) changing it, would likely set it off further.

Yep, every post an example. Constantly advancing foreign interests. I don't even know who you are, but in real life I've never met anyone who comes close to your posts, a person who as anti-UK as anyone I could conceive of outside of cartoonish villainy.

I hesitate to toss the word 'traitor' around because people are complicated, but there's nobody else I've seen online that embodies the term more than you, Peteblue. Putin's stoolpigeon, the rum-soaked canary in the mine. You are either blissfully deluded about what the sort of thing you type leads to, or just a horror-in-waiting.

Let's never converse again you utter weirdo.
If I am being honest @Xizor we live in a democracy. Which means everyone is allowed their opinion.

Even though Pete has opinions you may deem below you. The fact you can only treat Pete with mockery and satire, like you did with myself in the conservative thread weeks ago, when I bought up a topic of prejudice before all these riots even took place

Which proved my point. Funny no one has mentioned that have they. But wait it's 2024 no one has these opinions anymore. How I was so right.

I was even right about the solution to these riots. Police violence wasn't the main solution. Peace and unity is. Which during my rambling to many on here. Which I stated gays rights are fought and peace and love for everyone regardless of their fight.

Oh which place yesterday come out strongest in the counter riots? Brighton, known as the gay capital.

As the article I shared shows though, that's not the case (and never has been). This is one of my bugbears around immigration is that we have evidence, but too often the debate (especially in the media) ignores it. That's the road to playing on fear and emotion rather than logic, and has led us to where we are today.

Think we need to shift away from “police violence”. They aren’t the ones initiating the violence. Yes, there are some incidents were police will go too far, (like in any profession), but when you are having rocks thrown at you and fire balls sent your way as you try to protect local people and buildings, you then shouldn’t be accused of violence.

How do you know that everyone protesting against the thugs was ‘far left’. Do you seriously believe that it’s only ‘far left’ and Labour supporters that were out facing down the thugs. You and quite a few more on here need to get a life outside of your holier than thou groups. There are tens and tens of millions of good people in this country, both Labour and Conservatives. Believing only one lot cares about violence on the streets is pure stupidity…..
Shut up Pete, the "far left" was me quoting her and you didn't get the tone of my comment at all.

I know it’s not the case mate, I talked to many asylum seekers who were sick of not being able to work and hated receiving charity (as the service I worked for had partnerships with local bike companies to provide free bikes etc).

But that hasn’t stopped it being used as a beating stick by peoples lack of understanding no matter how many times you tell them. (As it then gets thrown back that they just work illegally 🙄).

What you hope doesn't happen is some halfway bs whereby companies give the government a backhander and are then placed on an "approved" list whereby people can work for them at below market rates, while the companies coin it in. You see similar things happen in America with regard to receipt of welfare.

That wasn't my suggestion. I was stating instead others who suggested a stronger police actions against rioters was required. I said that the public coming out in force was a stronger and more effective means of stopping these riots.

Which has shown to be true.
