In my experience he's generally approved of in public and criticised in private. Most would vote for him or his political allies however and could well believe his popularity figures.
@MarcelsGoat makes a good point about Putin still taking a lot of credit for pulling the country off its knees after the fall of the Soviet Union and returning a sense of importance to the country.
Anyway, he can't keep going on forever. He's a steady predictable leader who is a convenient bogeyman for the West, and it'll be very interesting to see who is next up.

As said, the only thing out of Russia of any interest for me and millions of others right now is how their vaccine is performing.
Going by how Alexey Navalny is dave, the 'vaccine' is performing well.
