Potential ban on betting companies on shirts

Therein lies the problem for many people. You need people around you you can trust, and people around you who have your best interests at heart. I, for example, set up a firewall on the internet so that all betting sites would at least be blocked on the wifi network. Would have worked until our dad demanded the firewall be lifted so that he himself could gamble - fully aware that his other son would be able to continue betting his life away! You couldn't make that stuff up. It also doesn't help when the addict himself refuses to talk about the subject, so really there is very little way to help, as you say. Terribly sad situation, but if people are unwilling to accept they have a problem or allow others to help ...

Excluding yourself from betting websites is another one that doesn't help. There is always another one to go to the next day when you convince yourself that it's your time to win big. I was amazed by how many there actually are. I'd self excluded from at least 20 by the time I started to do something about it.

Gambling needs to be outlawed from the game completely, but obviously never will because of the money it generates. But it's extremely dangerous, encourages kids that gambling is fine and easily sucks people in to "have a flutter" which can easily spiral out of control. Who here doesn't know somebody who thinks a tenner scorecast bet is just part of a regular matchday? Or that a weekly accumulator is something that goes hand in hand with the fixtures. It's all well and good removing gambling logos from sorts, but if it isn't brought into legislation then you can bet most clubs won't think twice about selling their arse to the highest betting company.

Sorry about your brother, but this attitude of banning something because of your experience with it is dangerous.

A cynic writes;
A ban wouldn't effect any of the top 6. It would have an enormous effect on any of the remaining EPL sides who currently rely on this sponsorship. Top 6 gap increases, leads to Euro Super League.
So; Big 6 get what they want and can claim the moral high ground.
Right out of the RS playbook that.
Could just be me being too cynical.

Gambling laws have been opened up in recent years in the USA and NBC has already started a betting game during their PL broadcasts, inviting viewers to enter their bets for that day's lineup of matches for a chance to win a purse. I don't really follow other sports but I've never seen this sort of call to gambling in any sports broadcast that wasn't footy. It's like they're marketing it as an inherent aspect of the English game.

Now that is a holistic approach to screwing people

Also Heineken make millions off their "When you drink. never drive" marketing. Different, I know, but interesting nonetheless. If anybody thinks they are doing this kind of marketing to simply highlight awareness of drink driving they are fooling themselves, haha!

This is what I see too. Only Brighton (Amex has HQ there), Leicester (owners own Kingpower too) and Sheffield United (don't know anything about USG) have non-betting sponsors among the 14 non-"Big 6" teams. This clearly benefits them and imo does very little to discourage betting if that's what the goal is.

I must be in the minority here but I don’t see the problem with betting firms on shirts. Are they going to get rid of them on the advertising hoardings, get rid of Ray Winstone during the games and stop them sponsoring leagues too?
I’d rather have cigarettes than betting firms. Cigarettes take a longer time to screw up lives

I could be wrong, but isn't that a free entry? I don't believe NBC can keep anything, if they do charge anything it all goes to the purse, which would make you somewhat correct.

I've never met anyone who buys a Heineken because of that ad.... I'm not sure what would make you happy. Let's ban everything, and introduce protein rich vegan lifestyle for all.

It's a free-entry bet with a prize. I just I wondered whether it occurs in other sports broadcasts (basketball, American football) or whether betting's being marketed as part of the "English footy experience."

Oh my bad, no it has been going on with the other sports for years. It started with American football, and has moved onto basketball and baseball. It moved into football last. I don't think anyone raised in America associates it with the English foott experience, but I see where you could draw that conclusion.

It's just copying something fox, cbs, yahoo, draft kings and that other daily fantasy football thing have been doing for awhile now. I don't believe it has any connection to the relationship between the epl and gambling sites.

I will say though leagues and states are looking at what the epl offers on-site and trying to replicate it on steroids down to prop bets on the very next play you can place from your seat on your mobile phone.
