Potential ban on betting companies on shirts

I must be in the minority here but I don’t see the problem with betting firms on shirts. Are they going to get rid of them on the advertising hoardings, get rid of Ray Winstone during the games and stop them sponsoring leagues too?

Because there are too many snowflakes in this country who cant be trusted to act responsibly without government intervention.

I would say education and support is surely needed for people who can be turned to ruin by something as easy as Sports Pesa being named on a clubs shirt for example.

I like a pint and a bet but just because ale or bookies names are plastered around doesn't turn me into an addict.

But then you probably started gambling in an era before smart phones and them being almost literally the only people who advertise on TV during football. If there is a dramatic increase in problem gambling since deregulation (and there is), is it better to throw money at treatment forever and a day or to reduce harm through cost free initiatives like an advertising ban?

Ive just believed that humans as a species will always have those who are either responsible or not in society and no amount of banning or regulation will prevent that.

At what point do you draw the line at banning/regulating things?

For me a caring society actually looks at whats the root cause for people becoming an alcoholic or heavy smoker or gambling addict rather than the lazy "lets ban this or regulate that" which ultimately does nothing.

Look at how many boozers and betting shops there are in Liverpool City Centre alone - ultimately imo its a futile gesture that does little to help those that need it.

Maybe not, but it prevents more people getting into it in the first place.

I agree, you will always have problem gamblers, alcoholics, smokers etc. But you mitigate the harm. The percentage of people who smoke has plummeted from even the 1980s until now and large part of that is a ban on advertising. Nobody is saying you can't smoke (I'm happy for people to do whatever they like as long as they're not harming others), just make it less attractive/more difficult for people to start down the road.

Then, once you stop the bleeding, you can work on the root cause. Although (as much as I like a drink and I think smoking looks cool), you're asking the wrong man what the attraction of gambling is... totally lost on me.

Out of interest, how many of us have changed our online betting agency to Sportspesa because they sponsor us?
I don't do online gambling, but doubt I would change if I did just because they sponsor us

Gambling needs to be outlawed from the game completely, but obviously never will because of the money it generates. But it's extremely dangerous, encourages kids that gambling is fine and easily sucks people in to "have a flutter" which can easily spiral out of control. Who here doesn't know somebody who thinks a tenner scorecast bet is just part of a regular matchday? Or that a weekly accumulator is something that goes hand in hand with the fixtures. It's all well and good removing gambling logos from sorts, but if it isn't brought into legislation then you can bet most clubs won't think twice about selling their arse to the highest betting company.

Hopefully. I have no problem with people gambling but the promotion of it around football is, in my opinion, wrong and a blight on the game.
I remember listening to a match. Commentary on talk sport a few years ago and it always stuck with me.

Part way through the game the commentator suddenly provided up to date /in play odds for next goal scorer and who would win, and told the listener to place a bet on sky bet.

It didn’t sound like an advert, partly because it was the same bloke that’s been commentating, partly because it came so naturally along with the commentary, and partly because it was given as an instruction.

It sat uneasily with me straight away.

Other than playing the machines when I was about 16-20 I’ve never had any issues with gambling, thankfully, but I could just imagine what an addict would think hearing that. Would they be able to not place a bet?

Banning betting companies from shirts is sensible to me, but you’re right, unless it goes with lots of other stuff, it won’t make any difference.

I also, as an aside, heard this morning on the radio that betting companies are going to be made to not accept credit card payments after pressure from govt. I couldn’t believe that they were allowed it in the first place. Genuinely surprised.

They still do.

I listened to the Palace/Arsenal game the other day for a bit and they were updating odds now and then.

Haven't myself but they ran a free shirt/discounted shirt promo a while back and I know a good few people jumped on board for that

I signed up for the free shirt.

Didn’t use it much at first but Willian Hill stopped laying Over/Under Corner betting but Sportpesa do it so I use them quite a lot now as that is my favourite bet these days.

With gambling it’s about knowing your limits, I do an acca most days, depending how much football is on but I don’t spend more than 25p if online or 50p in store on it, that way if it comes in I get a decent amount, if I don’t then I’ve lost little. It’s scary seeing grown men throwing £10-20 notes at a time into the slots and touch screen terminals
