Which is where we go back to what i said TB "we should always play that where possible"

It's only possible for half a season really, Cahill does stay fit for that long sadly. so we do need players who can play in different roles and formations.

I rate the 4-5-1 formation, it's effective but sometimes you need to freshen it up and change things to hurt teams in different ways. We need players who have the ability to adapt.

Bit harsh on Cahill, had his problems but hopefully he is over them now, when fit he should play and in the 4-5-1 formation as its our most dangerous formation

That post sums it up perfectly for me. Think it's by far the most important signing to be made. Hopefully his successor will have the same defensive qualities, coupled with vision, passing and athletisism.
To be perfectly honest I admire Lees work rate and commitment but now hes gone I feel we should be able to improve on him as his actual ability on the ball was not of a top 4 class bringing in a player who also has vision would be my first task as manager but as always the budget rules you dont get top class players cheap.

Harsh? That's just like me saying your harsh on Vaughan. I love Cahill, he's a quality player but the fact is he has had his problems and doesn't complete full League seasons.

4-5-1 is a very good formation but it's not a must. If we sort the centre of midfield out and buy a striker 4-4-2 could also be an excellent option. As I've said it's all about interchanging players and finding the right combo to hurt certain teams.

I just want an adaptable team really, I don't want to rely on one formation all the time and I don't want players to be musts. If a player is off form I want Moyes to replace him with another player. Obviously this will only happen if we sign players. We'll have to wait and see what Moyes gets in.

Well he plays more than 2 games a season TB so unfair comparison

I agree with you, I think your spot on when you say we can't rely on Vaughan as he's never proven he can play more than a few games. The same goes for Cahill, we can't rely on him to complete a season.

So really where not being harsh where just being realistic.

You can name all the players in the world that could do a job as a defensive midfielder.

But i'd love to see them fit quickly into Carsley's boots.

No one fits in straight away, Carsley took a season or two to establish himself in the team. He's was a very experienced player back then aswell.

The new defensive midfielder will probably be younger and will take time to find his feet. It's only natural, not every player is a quick fit. Hopefully the new lad if we get him does fit in quickly but you've got to be fair and give him time.

That's exactly the point I was trying to make. Maybe something got lost in translation.(y)

Being able to play more than one formation is never bad. I also prefer 4-5-1, as I'm one of Cahills biggest fans. No doubt in my mind, that he's one of the very best in the world playing in that position. Problem is, that when he's out injured, the 4-5-1 system simply doesn't seem to work. 4-4-2 is another option, but it's not a system Cahill or Carsley revel in. So bringing in someone to replace Carsley, is only part of the answer. Next DM should also be able to fit in perfectly in a 4-4-2 formation. That alone will help Cahill, but would prefer someone in the Moutinho/Fernandes or even Johnson mould to be brought in to play in that system.
