Remember the season we finished 4th?
We started the following season with Carsley injured. We had a terrible start, was no coincidence our fortunes changed when he came back.
I don't agree with that to be honest. Carsley's missed badly because we haven't brought anyone to replace him, he's not missed because he was a superb defensive midfielder.
Anyone decent defensive midifelder who can do the basics could replace him and do a solid job. The problem is we had a centre back and a 17 year old trying to do his job, both looked lost.
its pretty obvious we have modelled our team around having a DM, there isnt a single person i dont think who has said we dont need to get a replacement, yet even last season we still only had Carsley. Thats what i meant by influencial, he wasnt a great DM but he did the job.GhostOfDixie said:Bang on. Let me explain what Carsley did for Everton. He booted the ball away. I could do that. He had no panache, no creativity, no style, no intelligence, no pace, no stamina, no control. He just booted the ball away.

Cant say i completely agree with that, thats pretty much what we did today boot long balls up the pitch very negative get it out of our half defending. Like you say the DM links the defence and attack, when Carsley tackled someone or intercepted a ball it was almost always kicked in the direction of a free everton midfielder. Thats the difference for me between a CB and a DM and Carsley did it ok.
Id like someone better than Carsley in that position, someone to carry the ball a bit and do something creative, but for the time being anyone who can competently be a DM will do...
But not great, Rodwell is capable of being ten times the player Carsley ever was.

In a few years yes, at this moment in time not a chance. Carsley was in my opinion average but he was reliable. He kept it very very simple and rarely made mistakes. He limited us at times but he also helped us.
Rodwell is already technically better than Carsley. He's better on the ball and he passes it better. Physically he's good, 6ft 2, he's got a good stride on him and he's strong.
He's very naive though and makes mistakes. He won't give the ball away alot but when he does it's in a dangerous position. Positionally he's not quite there yet either.
As a defensive midfielder he should make the pass and hold his position. At the moment Jack makes the pass and runs forward leaving a big hole in midfield. We all know he's got attacking qualities but that isn't his role in the team, he should keep to the basics.
He's got it all really but he's 17 and should be used sparingly. I'm hoping M'Bia can come in and Rodwell can learn from him. That would be the ideal situation, he can come in and Rodwell can be his understudy.

I would expect that Rodwell or the inevitable arrival of M'bia would have more to their game. The defensive midfielder is a bridge between the defence and attack, and its crucial to the success of the team. Rodwell is going to be world class, M'bia may well be a couple of years ahead of him, but either way that position is going to be sorted very soon. So lets not worry so much.
Did anyone notice moysies attitude after the game he did,nt seem as pissed off as when we lost some games last season, also the last week or so when he has spoken he seems to be giving hidden messages in some of the answers he gives.
I think he has had enough and if he goes kenwright should be lynched.
